I have had several MRI's recently for an ongoing health issue. Tonight I had my thoracic and cervical spine done again. During the first phase of the MRI, I started experiencing burning sensations in the back of my head and along my back where it was touching the pad that I was laying on. I assumed there was some type of heater under the pad (they always work hard at keeping me warm as my veins disappear when I'm not) and tried to concentrate on relaxing. The burning increased until it was unbearable, especially on the back of my head and I finally pushed the call button. The lady said sometimes the machine got hot if it was working hard, just like a car engine, and put a washcloth under my head for the remainder of the MRI. Almost 4 hours later, the back of my head and neck still burns pretty badly. It isn't horrible, more like a really bad sunburn. I can't see the skin but it is very warm to the touch. I've tried putting ice on it and that temporarily relieves the pain.
I have no implants, had no leads, no patches, nothing that could cause any type of actual burn from metal. I do have a tattoo on my lower back but have not had any issues from that at any other time. I've had at least three other MRI's that did not cause this sensation although this is the longest one.
Using Google, I can only find mention of burns when a machine is malfunctioning or due to having some type of metal involved. Does anyone have any similar experiences? If so, what do you do?
