Oral Medication Problems

I am writing a new post because I have lined out pretty much most of the "multiple" complications I was having (finding a pump so on so forth) and am having a bit of a new problem.

My boy's medical condition is sort of complicated but basically their body does not recognize the hormone in their bodies that regulates sodium (salt) and so they waste it out through their urine. Because of this they have to take heavy doses of sodium in order to not have their sodium fall to critically low levels.

So the only way to take this medication is oral and it has to be diluted or else... well you can just imagine trying to get a baby to drink down a syringe full of heavily concentrated salt water.

Before they were taking it 3 times a day but that has now been changed because their sodium level was fluctuating too much doing that way. So now they have them taking it at every feed, which is every 3 hours. So far this is doing the trick and keeping their sodium at normal levels.

So today we tried mixing different amounts of breastmilk with the sodium and 20ml seems to be the smallest amount we can mix with it and the boys still be able to drink it. 15 ml was too concentrated and caused them to vomit.

By the time you get their medication down them they are exhausted poor little guys and I so far have not had much success on getting them to nurse after this, but I of course HAVE to give them the medication first or else I run the risk of them not taking it all and it is very, very important they take it all.

So thoughts??? Even if you have no advice just a word or two of encouragement would really be helpful at this point, it is sometimes hard not to get a little down and discouraged by the situation.

Wow....that's gotta be rough momma. HUGS!!!

Okay...because I would want babes to nurse at the breast I would do an SNS or lactaid at the breast with 20 ml of breastmilk in it with the medication. That way the babes are nursing at the breast AND getting the medication. Does that make sense?

Good luck!

Hugs to you, Momma! The SNS does sound like it might be worth a try. But your boys are also getting your breastmilk either way, which is GREAT for them. Also, I see they are less than a month old right now; hopefully as they grow bigger and stronger and have more stamina, feedings will become easier for all of you.
It sounds like you are doing a great job; hang in there!

Thank you all.  We are still hanging in there, we haven't bought the SNS yet but we are going to a town that has a store that carries them soon and I am going to get one then and give it a try.  I got permission from the endocrinologist to give their medication through a syringe so that has made things a little easier.  During all of this I got the stomach flu and ended up in the hospital getting much needed IV fluids.  So now my milk supply has taken a very sudden plummet.greensad.gif

But we will persevere.thumb.gif  I realize now how easy I had it concerning breastfeeding my other children.
