CPAP machine?

Thread Starter

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and last night was my first night using it.  It was horrible!  I couldn't get comfortable and when I finally did fall asleep I don't think it helped at all because I am completely exhausted today and can barely function.  Plus my throat really hurts, which is weird.  Has anyone else used a CPAP machine?  Any input is appreciated!

Ah yes, the CPAP machine!  Give it a six weeks - literally.  It will take about a month to get used to sleeping with it, but after that you'll have a hard time sleeping without it.  You will be tired out of your mind for that month though (like having a newborn!).  Does your machine have a setting where the air doesn't blow as hard in the beginning, to help you fall asleep?  It might be worth trying if your has that setting.  My husband has to get used to his for about ten minutes each night before he can fall asleep (he plays games on his ipod while in bed with the machine on for a bit before actually trying to fall asleep).

Your throat probably hurts because the air being blown in is dry.  Does your machine come with humidifier thingy?  If not, I think you can just use a regular humidifier in your bedroom, and that should help.

Stick with it - you WILL get used to it eventually!

Oh yes - forgot to mention that if you have a tendency of taking it off in the middle of the night (and not realizing it because you're still half asleep), you might want to check out the different kinds of masks on the market.  Hope that helps!

My mother adjusted but it did take a while. I think most people do if they stick with it. My insurance allowed an oral device if I "failed" cpap and I think that affected my motivation for success. It takes time and sometimes a mask switch as well.
