Classifying expenses

Hi, I am trying to keep track of my spending each month, but some expenses I am not sure how to categorize. I don't want to many sub-categories, but, for instance, would kennel expenses when we are travelling count as a travel expense or a pet expense? and on that same note would meals eaten out when on vacation count as an eat-out expense or a travel expense?  Thanks in advance.

I would count them as travel expenses, because when you are budgeting for a vacation, you would need to include them in your overall vacation cost.

I would count it as a travel expense. You wouldn't need the kennel if you weren't going on vacation. 

Now the food is tricky. Because you won't be buying food at home. I would go with travel.

In order to partially fund it though I would use whatever money from the food budget I wasn't going to be using because I'm not home.

I budget those types of things in the "vacation fund". Any and all expenses that would not happen if not for the vacation/travel go into "vacation" in our spending plan.
