My husband and I have been in the process to adopt from Uganda. We hada referral for a little girl, Shaida, who was 16 months old. She was beautiful. She was born to a 19 year old woman who had been raped. The woman got HIV from the rape and also became pregnant. She passed the HIV to the baby girl through breastfeeding. When she got sick enough with AIDS that she could not care for the child, she placed the child at an orphanage.
Â
Today we got a call from our agency that the baby girl got an infection last week and died sometime in the last couple of days. We were so close to saying yes and my heart is just broken. We loved this little girl and have spent the last few months picturing her as our daughter. I'm thankful we loved her and were praying for her, but just broken right now.
Â
Nothing about this is right. It's not right for 19 year old girls to be raped and infected with HIV. It's not right for this child's birthmom to be too sick to care for her child. It's not right for the child to die basically alone because she did not have access to medical care. To medication that could have saved her life.
Â
It just makes me mad and sad and broken.

 I'm so sorry.
