I've been assuming that ds' reluctance with some of the phonics things that we've been doing was because he wasn't interested...but then looking at the list of ETC books began to wonder if perhaps it was just that he found what we were doing pointlessly repetitiously burdensome? As in...I've already got this Mom, why must we continue?

My ds hated phonics and refused to do anything phonics like. Â I'm sure he picked up some basic phonics from tv shows like Between the Lions and Electric Company. Â And he seemed to know his letter sounds from a pretty young age. Â But he essentially learned to read by increasing his sight words until he was reading. Â He absolutely hates repetition. Â Also the phonics books were uninteresting to him. Â The stories weren't intriguing and the language was too limited. Â He was a late reader who really started reading well between age 8 1/2 and 9. Â I'm sure he could have read beginning readers earlier but he had no interest. Â The books he was interested in at age 6-9 were for 9-12 yos so I just read them to him. Â

Absolutely possible. I was labeled "not interested" for years when in fact I was bored out of my mind.Â
