Feeling Crappy from Caffeine

Why do I feel so crappy an hour or so after my morning cup of coffee? I know it's the coffee because when I fast during Ramadan and give up that morning cup for a month or so, I don't experience that same feeling in the morning (I do have three days of hellish headaches in the beginning, though).Just wondering what it is about coffee -- or the caffeine in it -- that makes me feel so blah after the intial WOAH!

I'm not sure what exactly causes this but I know what you mean. I suspect it might be a blood sugar thing - I've read that coffee/caffeine can do a number on it. Probably if you google caffeine and blood sugar you could find something explaining how it works.

Personally I've found it helps a lot to eat something substantial with goodly amounts of protein and/or fat, like eggs, sausage, a cheese sandwich, etc with your coffee. If I *just* eat something carby (like bread or porridge), or not enough calories (like just a piece of toast instead of toast, eggs, and fruit) I tend to feel way worse. It's like I need substantial food to "ground" the caffeine.

Thanks for the tip, ursusarctos; I'll have to try it in the morning. Now that I think about it, I usually have something sweet (banana bread, date cookie, etc.) with my coffee and I'm sure that makes a difference. I really should just kick the habit, it doesn't even make me feel goo,d.

I SO know what you mean, lol. I drank coffee every morning for 2 years and then finally quit because it mostly just made me feel bad. A warm, rich cup of coffee in the morning is so tempting though!
