My daughter is pulling out her hair!

Ok, so as weird as it sounds... I think that it isn't that weird.

My dd is just 2 and she loves to suck her thumb and pull on her hair with the other hand... all this said, she has about twice as much hair on one side of her head than the other! It looks really funny and I noticed that she will acutally pull out the hair and tickle her face with it.

Sound, non disorderish, but still, I don't really want her doing this. Do you have any practical or not so practical advice about this???

I've tried giving her a lovie blanket that is furry to rub on her face and told her not to pull out her hair, but I think it is still happening at nap and bed time.

It does actually have a name: Trictotillomania. My DS1 has it... as a baby he loved to play with my hair. When he got to be ~1-1.5ish I started putting his hand in HIS hair, thinking he'd figure out it hurt to yank on hair and stopped. He didn't. He just started litterally pulling out his *OWN* hair. To the point that he ended up with a bald spot on top of his head. Our solution was/is to just keep his hair really short... he still loves to feel his own hair and when he's tired he can usually be found sucking his two fingers and playing with his bit of hair w/ the other hand. He's 3.5 now. shrug.gif Good luck!!

Yes, it seems like a much simpler solution for boys... I don't want a bald girl... :-(

Hum... her hair is up in a pony tail today. We'll see how that works.

mine does it too. Huge hair fetish. She wears a helmet now for only 6 weeks and dang!!! She has hair when not yanking it out! She's 18 months. She is an equal opportunity puller so she sorta had an old man hair line with a widow peak and balding on either side. She can't hardly touch her hair with her plagio helmet on. She ight stroke her helmet but her hair is growing great :)  Hope she gets use to not pulling when the hat comes off
