5.5 month old can't lift head up when on tummy

At a friend's house today, I noticed when I put her baby on her tummy that she couldn't lift her head up at all.  She just managed to move it from face practically in the blanket, to face to the side.  Also, when holding her up, she wouldn't stand up on her feet at all, and her whole body feels really squishy, no muscle tone at all.  She does hold her head up when you hold her sitting in your lap, though.  My babies were never like this at all.  Is it normal or could there be something wrong?

I don't  know what you can do though unless she asks. her ped should notice in their next visit.

That's definitely a red flag and should be checked out by a doctor. I was just reading the next section of my AAP guide and being that floppy at 5.5 months is definitely a reason to get medical help.

Very interesting.  She wasn't a preemie, and her brother who is almost two and only just started to walk, was just diagnosed with something that I think is called hypertonia.  His joints overextend.  Is that it?  Does it run in families?  When we watched her just be floppy on the floor, she just laughed and said, 'my babies are always like that!'  She doesn't seem to think anything's wrong because she's used to it with the first kid.  I hope the doc notices, cause I don't feel like I can say anything.
