DIY "learn to sew" kit

I was thinking of putting together a kind of "learn to sew" kit as a Christmas present for dd.  I've seen some commercial kits for sewing stuffed animals, purses and the like, but I've never taken too close a look.  Does anyone have any ideas for how I can make my own kit?  I was thinking maybe of doing a sew-a-cat-stuffy kit.  Would it work to cut out the shapes out of... felt?, maybe include buttons for the eyes, embroidery floss and a darning needle to sew with?  And of course polyfil or something to stuff it.  Should I make little holes where she should be sewing?

Any thoughts on the specifics and any further ideas of what else could be included would be greatly appreciated!  :)

Hi, I noticed no one had replied, but I bet it is because you seem like you know exactly what to do.  I think it is a great idea.

But maybe instead of cutting out the cat, you could just gift her with the supplies, as she might like to design her project herself.  You could give her an assortment of felt colors and embroidery floss, buttons, etc, maybe in her own little box or something, along with scissors and maybe a notepad and colored pencils or graph paper and she could sketch out her own patterns for different stuffies, etc.  She could also make herself a pin cushion or pillowcase or purse or whatever she likes.  I did this for my niece last year, and gifted her with a box of many beautiful large scraps, fat quarters, etc, along with assorted ribbons and other trims, and she has had such fun deciding what to do with all the lovely fabrics.
