Wondering if TF can help with panic attacks? Are they caused by deficiency?

This just occured to me so I thought I'd shoot it out there and see what I get.

I have been having panic attacks since I had my daughter and I am wondering if any TF mamas know something I don't about panic?  Could they be caused by a deficiency?  Is there something I should be taking?

I had a brutal one last night that landed me in the ER and now I have 10 xanax in my purse "in case of emergency"  I really don't want to traipse down that lane if I don't have to....

Help?

Thanks so much!

Yes!

I would get a copy of The Mood Cure by Julia Ross

and check out this site:

http://rebuild-from-depression.com/blog/

The blog (and book she wrote) are by a mom who used to post on mothering and used TF to heal from PPD.

I think my anxiety was multi-dimensional but there were definate nutritional causes that put me over the edge. Diet and supplements helped me so much (I was on 3-4 medications for severe PPD/anxiety after the birth of my son in 2004 and got off them in 2006 doing TF and the supplements in the 2 recommended books).

Blessings on your healing :)

I've never had a panic attack, but I do struggle with anxiety.  I've found that taking a daily magnesium supplement and fish oil supplement has made a real difference in my general level of anxiety.

I keep meaning to get a hold of a copy of The Mood Cure.  I've seen it recommended so often around here - it sounds very good.

I am not expert but I know that a candida over growth can cause anxiety attacks and  because TF does not use sugar or lots of grains it is good for you for sure. You might have to totally eliminate sugar even fruit for a while and add a probiotic

I second the magnesium, DHA/ALA, vitamin D, protein.  I think if you are deficient, supplements will work a lot faster than slowly rebuilding over time with diet, but a good diet is needed to keep it up.

My anxiety and panic attacks disappeared after I cut out dairy from my diet.  ymmv, but it's something to try.

I would not bet that food in the long run will work, you may think it will but for my DH and he has a family history of panic attacks, food does not turn his brain off and make it not happen, all the hoping in the world (and extensive therapy) does not lesson the attack either. mood is really only one part of it and the book mentioned didn't do a thing in his case and he eats very little dairy as well

I don't know if I have a family history of panic attacks.  I know that my great grandmother was a severe hypochondriac.  My grandmother, her daughter, has struggled with depression and not wanting to be like her mother so even if she thinks she is dying she would never ever talk about it.  My aunt may very well have anxiety but again, never mentioned.  My mother has none of this,  nothing really at all evn remotely like this.  I do not know my fathers family at all or him,   I do know that 2 of his siblings comitted suicide and one joined a cult, seriously, and he is a dead beat.

I guess my gut tells me it is nutritional so that has to mean something,  but it is getting worse right now as I am under a lot of stress and it seems different than usual which is worrysome.

I know with my DH what sets him off and I WISH food would help it but in his case (and for what we know of the ones with it in his family) food doesn't do a thing.

No magic food turns off the issues that cause him to have a panic attack, therapy really did nothing and even cause an attack once, pills do cause the attack to lesson and we have found nothing that prevent attacks- we did the "natural" things (herbs) and even rescue remedy and didn't see any change- he hates prescriptions meds but that is the only things that in some way helps

I have been thru several trips to the ER because of this-I know what hell this can be

I very rarely post in here, but I had to give some input here.
I am going to assume that you have eliminated all MSG from, but if not, do check into that.

I would be concerned at looking at Adrenal Fatigue as the potential causer.

I would look into adrenal issues too like another pp said...especially if it gets worse with stress.

My family has a history of mental illness and I consider myself healed now.  (there was also a spirtual side to it and I will share with anyone who wants to PM me or I could post it here). I used to think that it was just genetic and I had no choice...my doctor was even about to give up on me ever getting off meds. I would have panic attacks from anything specific like to the dentist to no particular reason. I had such severe anxiety about sleep sometimes that I could not relax to go to bed. It is so hard and I hope you find the for you solution soon ((hugs))

I am not proposing it is as simple as "eat this and cut this out and no more panic this week". On the physical side I had to take aminos, cut out allergen foods, eat traditonal foods, heal my adrenals, take supplemental nutrients, rest alot and after doing that a long time now I am okay. Nutrition was a foundation to getting the physical issues that caused my mental problems under control.  Then once my body and brain were balanced I could think clearly about the emotional/spiritual issues that contributed my depression/anxiety if that makes sense.
