Resolved: New vs Old posts?

In the old format, I could easily browse through the forums and tell which forums had new posts since my last visit, as they were bolded while forums with no new content where not. Then when you entered the forum, the new post titles where bolded and the ones with no new posts were not. This made browsing easier. Is there a way to set this up in the new format? Right now I cant tell if anything has new content short of opening it up and looking. And I can't tell which threads have new content vs which have none. I don't want to have to reply or subscribe to every thread, I just want to know what is new. Is there a way to do this?

I think you'll find the answer to your question in the Discussion Forum Tutorial Wiki located here.

Here's a C&P:

Reading the Forums

Understand The Icons

Forum Icon What It Means
20.jpg This indicates there is new content within a particular forum since your last visit.  You can click this button to mark the forum as read.
21.jpg This indicates that there is no new content in a particular forum since your last visit.
22.jpg This indicates that there have been new posts written in the given thread since your last visit.  You can click this button to go to the first new post.
23.jpg This indicates that there have been no new posts written in the given thread since your last visit.

Thank you! I think that answers it. I think the problem was last night was my first visit to the new format, so everything was showing as new content, even if I read it in the old format. This appears to have been fixed today. Short of opening the main forum, is there a way to see which sub-forums have new content? For instance, seeing if there are new posts in say, Gifted Parenting without opening Gifted Parenting or the main Parenting forum? Right now I have to open Parenting to see which parenting subforums have new content.

Ooops, I just checked and its not working. The icon only changes if I've opened a thread before. So if I did not open the thread on my last visit, its still showing as new content today, even though there have been no new posts to that thread. The same for forums- if I visited the forum yesterday and there's no new content, it shows the right icon. But if I did NOT visit the forum yesterday, its still showing the new content icon for forums I haven't visited even if there is no new content since my last visit.

Also, for sub-forums, I just noticed that the subforums for finding your tribe have no icons even if you enter the finding your tribe forum. It would be nice if there was a` way to tell if they had new content without opening them.

When a thread has new content in it, it is supposed to have the colored icon along with a bolded title. Unlike vBulletin, the software does not mark a forum as read if you enter it but do not look at all the threads. If there is new content in it at all, the icon remains colored. Users can always click that icon though or mark all forums read if they would like to start fresh and not have any old content tripping the "new content" icon. Have you tried clearing your computer's cache? I apologize for the problems you're encountering.

I have to say I love this aspect of the new board.  I would get really annoyed if things were marked before even though I hadn't actually read them.  This is a big board and sometimes I get pulled away from my computer before I get through the forums that interest me.

Yeah, I figured out how to mark the forums as read after I read each one and that solves the problem. Its one extra step, but thats ok. I also agree with Ola, on the old board I used to get frustrated that I had to read the whole forum at once or I'd lose my new content markers, so this is an improvement. Its new and different, but I think I could get used to it, now that I've got the hang of it. smile.gif Thank you for your help!
