We had a 2-door car when the kids were little. We also had a van. I drove the van and their dad drove the car. He had bought the car shortly before we met, and was willing to deal with carseats in it when needed. It didn't seem to be that much of a big deal to him.

And yeah, both our kids were forward-facing long before age 2. I don't remember anyone mentioning extended rear-facing carseats back when they were little, and it never occurred to me to worry about it. Maybe your neighbors are lacking information, rather than lacking good priorities.

Ironically, I would have preferred a 2 door car when dd was rear-facing. She didn't scream if she could see out the back, which because of seat angle was only possible in a 2 door or a truck.

(We turned her around around age 2 because of car screaming)
