How do you count?

Hey ladies,

I know this is a total newbie question, but I'm new to this! I was wondering whether you count how far pregnant you are from your ovulation date or from the start of your last AF? So, if I'm at CD30/14DPO, would I be considered 2 weeks along or 30 days?

It's normally from LMP, so you'd be 4 weeks. But really, it's O + 2 weeks for those of us who have long cycles and ovulate late. In your case you'd be 4 weeks either way. Congrats and welcome!

If you count by LMP, you're actually two weeks pregnant by the date of conception. So add 2 weeks on to however many days post-o you are and that's how pregnant you are. So right now you're 4 weeks pregnant. Going by that calculation, pregnancy lasts an average of 280 days and that's how due date is calculated. 

If you count from conception, you'd count approximately 266 days into the future and that would be your due date. So right now you'd be two weeks pregnant. Both due dates are exactly the same. 

In the US, we usually go by the first system.

Thanks! That helps so much. I always got confused when people said they just got a BFP and were 4 weeks pregnant. Now I get it! :)

Doctors use LMP, when talking to doctors (who arent my MW she understands) I adjust my LMP. Like I actually had AF Oct 7, but I will tell people Oct 14 because I know I ovulated around the 28th :)

But yes, you are 4 weeks pregnant when you find out!

To confuse you (and me, I left my soda in the oven today, not all there anymore) the baby's gestational age is 2 weeks behind your pregnancy weeks. So a 20w pregnant woman, has an 18w old fetus :)

This is true, because doctors assume that you generally won't know when you conceived, even though most of us do because we were charting. So what they generally do is calculate 280 days into the future from the first day of your last period and just assume all women ovulate two weeks after the first day of their period. If I went by that measurement, I would actually be due June 29th. Because I know when I ovulated and could have conceived, I calculate from that day and arrive at July 2nd. It can be really confusing.

Yep, if I went by the date of my last AF, I'd be due mid-June.  This was the most messed up cycle ever and I REALLY thought we were safe since AF was due any day.  But low and behold, I ovulated super late and am actually due July 1.  I think.  LOL!  Going for a dating u/s on Monday just to be sure, since I'm not 100% sure.  Fertility friend does not agree with me and thinks I'm due June 16.  2 weeks is a lot to be off at the end of pregnancy.

I go from the first day of my last AF just because I have no idea when I o'd.  Even though this is my 2nd pregnancy, I'm still pretty unclear on how the whole thing works.  DH and I just DTD a lot and boom, BFP...  With DD#1 not only did I not know when I o'd, but I couldn't remember when my last period had been. :/  My some miracle, DD managed to be born on her EDD!  So I'm just sticking with the calculator on this one.

My EDD is July 25th 2011. :D
