revamping an old travel trunk...

DH bought a really neat antique travel trunk a few years back...well its basically a waste of space at the moment. i want to revamp it into a toy trunk but it STINKS! it smells sooooooo bad inside. idk if its the wood? its musty smelling too though. its pretty rough seriously so i need you're help! how the heck can i make it work? strip the inner lining and replace it maybe? i need to get the stink out! then to re upholster the inside how do i get the lining out? do i just staple in the new one or do i glue it or something? what material would make a good lining?

I've used several of these for toys, dolls and dress up. I put fresh wallpaper in the inside. Use some essential oil in the warm water that you wet the paper with. So the scent of fresh goes in with the paper. Then, make sure you drill some air holes in the back of each suitcase in case someone decides their little brother should be "locked away".

In the south, we often put things like that open and outside on a really hot, sunny day. The solar heat tends to burn off lingering odors.

Does it look like it will come off completely? If not, the new paper might lay prettier if you just leave the old paper liner untorn and unmolested.

its not paper its like "velvet" but the trunk REALLY smells
