A few comments

I make sure not to put the box too out of the way because if I'm avoiding the smell it means I'm neglecting to change it often enough for my cats health and mine since he sits on my lap.

I don't lid it because can you imagine how bad the fumes trapped in there are for your poor cat?

That all being said, I use the silicon crystals and would never in a million years ever go back, I love that with even semi reasonable servicing do not smell at all. The added bonus is that since it desiccates the poop, i believe that it has less chance to grow bacterial and other yuck in it.
Everything is dry and rock hard within an hour of getting deposited.

I scoop and stir once a week, sometimes a tad more and change the whole box every 3-4 weeks.

I like the crystals.  I have 2 cats in a 2 BD apartment and have to designate one precious closet for them.  If I use any other kind of cat litter it stinks.  I scoop a few times a week and wash the whole thing every 3 weeks or so.  I just dump it out then fill it with water and dump out in toilet, then put in a little cleaner and swish with a paper towel then dump and rinse.  Takes a few seconds and isn't too messy.

Natural litters tend to not cover the odors very well.  I use Tidy Cats clumping litter (the red version) and I put a BUNCH of baking soda in it.  Like, to almost completely cover the top of the litter.  I don't scoop it very often, maybe once a week.  When I do scoop it, I put a bunch more baking soda in it.  I completely change the box once a month.  I dump all the old litter, then use hot water and dish soap to clean it out.  I dry it out completely, then start all over again.  We are in the process of selling our house, and everyone we have asked says that they can't smell any litter odor at all.  The only reason I'm using the clumping kind right now is b/c we are selling our house, and I can clean the box more often and the pee doesn't build up in the bottom.  Normally I use the non clumping kind b/c it has less dust and is safer for my cat.

Just wanted to update to say that I completely cleaned out the box.  Then did a big sprinkle of baking soda and then some World's Best litter.  And am scooping just about every day.  And, of course, it's made a HUGE difference.  Thanks for all the advice!
