how do i get the smell of smoke out of clothes?

just received a package from my mom in the mail.  two beautiful wool nova scotia tartan skirts (and matching tams) for my daughter.  the best part is that they were mine when i was her age. 

the problem is my mom has been a smoker for most of my life, so the skirts have been in a smoker's house for 30+ years.  mom said she had them dry cleaned, but the moment i opened the package, all i could smell was smoke.

is there a way to get the smell out or do i just let dd wear them and hope the smell fades with time?

To start, hang the clothes outside at least overnight. It may take a while longer than that for the smoke to dissipate, but I have found that just leaving things on the clothes line for a few days works wonders for both smoke and fragrance. The smoke may linger more on natural fibers, but I have gotten rid of smoke from wooden furniture (that came from a smoker's house) by leaving it in the attic for a few months. Good luck!
