Looking for math/logic brainteasers

My son is 7 and in first grade. We just had a conference and his teacher (who we adore) has asked that I send in some math/logic brainteasers (like a workbook) for him to do since he's already completed all the math packets for first grade. He can do double-digit addition (including carrying). Do they even make something for this age/skill level? Everything I see on Amazon is grade 6 or higher.

thanks,

p.s. Hmmm....wondering if Sudoku would count.

Just wondering why the teacher isnt providing the material??  This is Novmeber, what is your child going to do until May/June??

But to answer your question any bookstore (barnes and noble) or teachers type store will have brain teaser puzzle books for kids.

You know, she is completely fabulous, and has 31 students, including at least two who are on the spectrum. No aides. She knows that I am more than happy to help out in any way to make things more manageable, and this is one thing that's easy for me to do. DS is pretty gifted and definitely doesn't fit the first grade mold. I really appreciate her doing her best to challenge him. Sure, in a perfect world she'd have the time/energy/resources to track down the right stuff for him, but that's not the reality of public school in California right now. So long story short, yeah, it's maybe a little weird, but whatever. It's a solution that works for all of us.

(And, as far as the second part of your question, I'm not sure, but I'm not worried. He looped with this teacher from K, she's taught for more than 20 years, DS adores her, and I'm sure they'll work something out.)

I so seldom go into a real store other than Target or the grocery store! But Amazon hasn't been helpful. The nearest Lakeshore is pretty far. Do you think I need to go there, or will B&N be fine?

I think you'd be able to find something good at B&N or Borders. They usually have decent education sections. I don't have any specific suggestions, though. Maybe look into online programs? Most people don't think of them as being an option for kids that young, but there are age-appropriate programs. I don't mean just online math games, but a whole curriculum. Is there any computer access in the classroom?

I'm a teacher and I appreciate your willingness to help the teacher find materials that will work for your son. That sounds like it will work just fine for now. But I am also a bit concerned about what he's going to do long-term. What are the classroom schedules like? Is there any way he could join a 2nd grade class while they are doing math? If that isn't neccessary this year, you may want to start thinking about options for 2nd grade and beyond and discussing them with the school. In my school (tiny K-8 with only 60 kids), we have several kids who are accelerated a grade or more just in math. It's difficult to make it work in the schedule, but it's important that the kids are doing math that is appropriate for their ability.

Highlights makes a puzzle book series for kids 7+. I got them when I was a kid and remember they were quite good back then, haven't seen one in years, but I'd imagine they're still nice quality. They had a variety of puzzles, including logic problems. This is them here- http://www.highlights.com/puzzlemania-home

Does it have to be brainteasers? We're in a similar situation with DD, and I actually made her a math "book" with problems in it that are at the right level for her. She works on it during independent work time. We also sent in a reading comprehension workbook at a higher level. This was at her teacher's suggestion as well, so yours isn't the only one suggesting something of this sort.

My dd has always liked Perplexors. She could easily do the 8-9 year-old book when she was 6, so you may want to order up a little.

Thanks -- I did find a series at B&N called "Math for the Gifted Student." The second grade book looked perfect. The Perplexors look like a good fit, too, so I'll order some of those. We've gotten the Highlights Puzzlemanias before, and while there is some good stuff in there, there's also a lot that wouldn't qualify as math.

I appreciate the help!

Ditto Perplexors.  DD loves them.
