help please! im kinda freaking out!

So I do childcare for a living. My children come with me. Neither of my kids are vaccinated. I get to work this morning and learn that the 6 month old I'm watching is getting shots today and will be back in about an hour. I dont evenremember what shots they do but an worried about them shedding, please help! Should I have someone come pick up my baby? He already has a cold from another kid.:(

At 6 months I believe they still get a rotavirus vax, which is live and does shed.

The virus was also found to be shed in the stools of up to 8.9% of vaccinated infants and children, and may continue to shed for up to fifteen days. Since rotavirus enters the body through the mouth and spread via fecal-oral contact, caregivers should be especially diligent about hand washing when caring for a child who has received the rotavirus vaccine to prevent the spread of rotavirus to others.

But if you're "freaking out", I'd really recommend you revisit why you chose not to vaccinate, because chances are those reasons are just as valid now as they were then. And if not, then it's worth revisiting the question. You should feel comfortable in your choice.

It's probably the Dtap vaccine. If these kids are on schedule, this is also probably the 3rd Dtap shot the 6 month old has received. It's an inactivated vaccine, so the official line is no shedding. There may be other mamas on here who disagree, but I'm just saying what I've read. For what it's worth, my baby is undergoing delayed vaxes (more just cause I couldn't quite get it together when she was 2 mos old to get her the shots) and has been around many other babies who'd just had their Dtap. No problems.

Don't worry, it's not just the line...it's actually just plain ol fact :)  the DTaP vaccine cannot shed because it is not a live vaccine. With rotavirus, you are actually more safe from shedding on the day of the vaccine than you are during subsequent days..that's when the viral load builds and more is found in the poop of babies who had the vaccine. so there is nothing to worry about today really! beyond that, if the daycare has a hand washing policy after changing diapers and diapers are changed in a separate area...then there shouldn't be any issues.

In addition, shedding is much much less common after the second dose (down from 8% to 0-1.5%).
