He was born at 10:24 pm on Tuesday November 16th, he weighed 7lbs 13oz and was 20 inches long.
I had my midwife appointment on Tuesday afternoon at 11, I was 41 weeks + 2 days. I picked up my husband from work right before and we both headed to the appointment. At the appointment I had my midwife check me and I was 3 almost 4 cm and super soft, the baby's head was right there. I had lost my mucus plug and been having bloody show for the past 48 hours, She did a membrane sweep and then we talked about what would happen if I got to 42 weeks, etc. We talked about how I was ready and natural induction methods. She said she had a good castor oil recipe, and I said that I was ready to go that route and so we went to the store following the appointment to get the ingredients. I started having some cramping and contractions when we were at the store probably from the sweep. We grabbed some lunch and headed home. I told dh to go ahead and go back in to work and I would call him if things picked up. I kept having crampy contractions but nothing that seemed regular enough to keep track of. I made the castor oil concoction (which really didn't taste bad at all) and then went and took a nap. I got up from my nap at about 3:15 I got up from my nap, got my youngest ready for ballet and started worrying that I had forgotten about the ballet and the castor oil would kick in there and I would be spending my time in the bathroom over there (how embarrassing). Her ballet class started at 3:45 and I started noticing some stronger contractions while I was there, (I didn't make any trips to the bathroom though). We got home at 4:30 and I checked on the stew I had been cooking all day, helped the kids with their homework. I went to the bathroom at about 5 and noticed more bloody show, and my contractions were starting to regulate. I texted dh to come home. He got home and gave the kids some dinner and started getting them ready for the bed.
At 6 I really had to start focusing through contractions at this point and dh started timing them. They were ranging at about 3-4 minutes apart and lasting about 1 min 24 seconds. They seemed much more intense then my usual start of labor ones. I told my husband I thought it might go faster than normal, and to call my midwife and the photographer. A couple contractions at this point had me drop to my knees and I had to have dh squeeze my hips. My midwife said she was gonna call her assistant and apprentice and that they would be right over, my photographer also left.
Meanwhile at our house the kids were in bed and Steve (dh) was running around trying to get the pool set up and tend to me at the same time, my contractions had gone up to about 2 minutes apart at this point and were super intense. It felt most comfortable to be on all fours and to have dh squeeze my hips and push on my lower back.
My midwife, her crew and the photographer all manged to get to my house at 8 o'clock. We had begun filling the pool but had run out of hot water so were having to fill up pots and boil water on the stove.
My midwife got her stuff set up and checked the heartbeat and my blood pressure all of which was good. My legs had started shaking at this point and it was almost like I had chills (again something that had never happened in my previous births). The pool was finally ready and I got in somewhere between 9 and 9:30, timing seems to be a blur from here on because the contractions were on top of each other and so intense, if Steve even thought of moving his hands off my hips or back I would scream. At about 10 I started feeling somewhat pushy and had to somewhat grunt and groan through contractions and could feel the baby's head coming down. My midwife kept having me put my hand down to feel the head coming and this really helped me stay connected to what was going on and not lose my mind by the intense pressure. Suddenly I really started pushing and panting and blowing and felt the stinging of the baby crowning. The midwife's assistant when and grabbed my girls and from our bedroom (they actually never ended up going to sleep) and my mom. I pushed the head out and kept blowing and then suddenly as I was pushing my midwife told me to grab my baby and bring him up to me from out of the water, I did and it was the greatest feeling ever, I get teary just thinking about it. He had a 10 apgar and I had no tearing.
My oldest announced it was a boy and so here we are a happy family of four. He is nursing great and as sweet as can be. I am enjoying having my parents here and have been able to just stay in bed or on the couch. I also haven't changed any diapers, which has been nice. We are still trying to figure out a name that fits him just right, hopefully we will have something soon because it's driving me batty not having something to call him.
Here are a few more pictures of him from today
