first time mom, 7 week old DD, tell me if I should be calling the doc!

Ok here is the rundown...

Wednesday, DD wakes up with a stuffy nose.  Has a little bit of runny poop.  By nighttime, has a rectal temp of 99.2.  Throws up on DH before bed.  Otherwise acting/sleeping/eating normally.

Thursday, DD wakes up with a less stuffy nose.  No fever, but poops alllll day long, with mucus, and even has one diaper that is nothing but green mucus.  No vomit.  Otherwise acting/sleeping/eating normally.

Friday, today, DD sleeps a 6-hour stretch the night before (never happened before!).  Nose seems fine.  No fever.  Poop looks better.  However, is only awake for 30 minutes this morning before falling back asleep around 8AM and she is still asleep now at 11:50AM (I did get her to eat at 9:15).  I tried to wake her up a bit at 11:15 and was unable to (wanted to try and get her to eat again)...she would open her eyes and look at me and then fall immediately back asleep.

Is any of this cause for concern??  I thought she just had a little bit of a virus and was going to wait it out, but the sleeping a long time today is freaking me out a little for some reason.  If it is just a virus, the ped wouldn't even be able to do anything anyway, so why call and have to bring her to a germy office?  Right?  Or does this sound like something more sinister?  I'm a bit of a worry wart and this is my first baby.  redface.gif

mucousy poop can be a sign of food intolerances. are you bfing? do you drink dairy?

Babygrant: Not sure if you wrote a reply, all I see is my own quoted post?

Lionessmom: I am bfing.  I have a little bit of dairy but not large amounts.  Butter every day and a bit of cheese or yogurt maybe every other day.  Babe has never had mucusy poop before though, and since it coincided with her other sick symptoms I was chalking it up to virus.

She did just rouse enough to eat at noon, but is still asleep right now.

all those symptoms can be food intolerances that usually dont make baby ill until after 6 weeks. that is how it went with my DD1. it can also be a virus. keep an eye on it to see if it comes back. it doesnt sound like anything else to me. but i can only go on my own experience. always trust your instincts. if you think it could be something worse, see a doctor. if it makes you feel better, i suggest keeping a detailed journal. write down what you eat and when, when baby eats and how she acted while doing it. what baby's bm looked like, when it happened. baby temp etc. when baby puked, how much, what it looked like (if there was mucous in the puke) etc. it helps to see if there are patterns. it can rule out a food sensitivity. it can also help you figure out if it is just a virus or if there is something else going on.

Argh, I'm sorry.  I don't like this new layout.  it doesn't work properly for my replies!!!!

I replied saying that personally I would bring her in.  My son got really sick with a bad cold when he was about 10 days old and it was scary how lethargic and difficult it was to get him to eat.  I'd rather

err on the side of caution.

The fever points me away from food issues and towards a small virus. It can take a few days for babies to recover, so keep an eye on signs of dehydration and keep nursing. Dehydration would show as a depressed soft soft, and sticky mouth.

Poor lil gal, and her mama too.

If she was my child I would take her in. I would be concearned if my LO suddenly started to sleep so much and I was not able to wake her up. That sounds like lethargic to me.

Nothing you've described would concern me enough to see the dr yet. Keep an eye on her temp, her soft spot, wet dipes, and do your best to prevent dehydration. Theres a nasty cold going around our house, with symptoms like you describe. If she starts refusing to nurse or her temp rises dramatically, i'd probably call. But sleepiness paired w congestion and mucus just sounds like a cold to me. Id probably be waking her every 2-3 hours to nurse, just to make sure. If shes not eating much and you're getting engorged, you may need to pump/express milk so your supply doesnt drop.

But, does your ped work Saturdays? You may want to call and get just in case info from them since it is Friday afternoon already.

Update:

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I ended up calling (since it is Friday afternoon and all, didn't want to go all weekend second guessing myself) and just speaking with a nurse, who said basically the same thing cristeen did...just keep an eye on her and make sure she eats and doesn't go over 100.4.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond!  This new mom stuff is a little nerve wracking!
