tooth extraction @ 8 months with pre-eclampsia dangerous?

Apparently being pregnant can wreck havoc on your teeth from what I just found out.  Never knew that but that's not important now.  Never had a cavity in my life and now I have a abscess tooth, fever, swollen face, the whole deal.  Started a round of antibiotics on Thurs and I am scheduled to have my tooth extracted on wed night.  (yay just before I have to cook for thanksgiving).  Now my obgyn is extremely worried about me having such a bad infection (type 1 diabetic, prone to infections both staph and strep after my daughters emergency c-section a year ago).  He is also worried about having my tooth taken out because I have pre-eclampsia.  I really do not know what to do.  He wants the tooth pulled asap but everything he has told me about blood pressure issue and bleeding and clotting has me worried.  Especially because I do have to cook thanksgiving dinner and take care of my 15 month old pretty much alone.

So do you ladies think that having a tooth extracted with high blood pressure, last time it was 200/97 on thursday.  Is it really that dangerous?  Should I just wait out the infection and try to deal with the pain?  Are bad infections really a cause of a concern for the baby?  I heard it causes preterm labor, which I did have with my daughter.  Does the Novocaine shot hurt that bad, I am so so scared lol.  the thought of natural childbirth does not worry me one bit, but the thought of a needle in my mouth makes me dizzy!

TIA!

Oh my! That's quite a lot to have on your plate. First thing I would wrangle up is some help with thanksgiving! I don't know anything about teeth and preeclamsia, but I would have a good long talk with the ob about what your options are. Sometimes antibiotics can settle things down for a while, but I do think it is pretty serious to have a bad infection and a Bp that high. I hope you have people following you closely, and get this all figured out soon!
All the best!

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice on the danger of having a tooth extracted when you have other medical issues going on. Does your tooth hurt? I would remove it ASAP if it is causing you pain. If you don't have it taken out will you be taking a ton of antibiotics until the birth? I wouldn't want to do that either. With DS 1 I had a tooth go bad a couple weeks before I went into labor. OMG it was the worst pain I've ever felt. Labor was manageable, but that toothache was not! Try not to worry about the novacaine shot, either. It really isn't bad, especially if you have a good dentist. It's just a little pinch and it's over quickly. Sounds like you've got way too much stuff to deal with before the birth. I hope you get to relax soon hug.gif

Oh, what a tight spot! First of all, for sure, you need in home helpers for you and your 15 mo. old,and your Thanksgiving.DO NOT DO ALL THAT ALL ALONE!Please.K?I know you can,but just accept some help and holiday care. You SO owe it to all 3 of you.:)Also, if you are getting an extraction you need backup, recovery can be difficult in a body that's busy growing another person.:)

I think there are many options here, let me add, I had two teeth extracted this spring while I was pregnant-first trimester and it miscarried,so it doesn't exactly apply here, but I know the pain,I know the procedure, and I know a bit about the recovery, especially the first few hours.(I don't know personally about diabetes or pre-eclampsia,or bloodpressure)

So one option is natural remedies such as clove and peppermint to heal the abcess and wait to extract-Pain and worry alone, I think would rule this out...but it's an option.

Another option is to have the extraction and do everything as you normally do-very difficult, stressfull and possibly harmful to the health and wellbeing of all involved.

Another option is to recruit help NOW!!!!!!!You are in PAIN!!!!!!IN YOUR HEAD!!!! (in the meantime, are you able to eat?) So recruit helpers, have a schedule of times you may depend on them, and DO IT! It could be so fun to get to chill with friends and family playing with your toddler as you get the rest and care you require.Have someone care for your Thanksgiving.I know, this could be hard to let go of,BUT it's just this one time! And it could create fun and adventurous and positive memories for you and your children and the helping friends/family.The novicain shot is nothing, a millisecond of a pinch.Be sure you are pleasantly distracted and not stressed through the entire dental visit.Give your body lots of TLC and care, and your mind as well.(I had no distraction or gas or anything because I was pregnant, and it was much more physiologically distubing than I anticipated, I also drove myself the hour drive home, and then cared for my 5 children as I recovered.I STRONGLY advise against this!Doable, but not healthy.)

SO, lots of TLC, a happy ThanksGIVEN dinner, and positive environment that you are not expected to be in charge of. :)

I wish for you ease of procedure, happy healing, and loads of delightful support!Followed in several weeks by a lovely birth and a lovely babymoon.:)

High BP will make it more difficult for you to clot off properly. If your liver is malfunctioning that makes clotting issues even more difficult. But you *really* don't want that infection to become systemic. Extracting the tooth is, IMHO, is well worth the risk vs benefit.  I hope it all worked out already as your post is a number of days old.

Yup the clotting was a huge issue.  It never did and I got the dreaded dry socket.  They actually took it out the monday before thanksgiving in case I did have issues during the holiday weekend.  Good thing because infection came back or never cleared before it was pulled and the stupid dry socket.  It's been a week and a half and I am finally able to eat something other than smoothies!  You were right the needle was nothing.  Thank you for replies wink1.gif
