Homebirth and cord blood donation?

Does anyone know if it is possible to donate cord blood to a public bank if you have a homebirth?  I'm assuming no, but I'm thinking of calling them tomorrow to find out.

I've collected cord blood for donation to the NE cord blood place.  It's possible, but most said "no".

It's possible, but when clients ask me about it I discourage it. Google "George Malcolm Morley" and read his information about delayed and early cord clamping.

 

Simply put, the blood belongs to the baby.

 

Of course, if parents still want to do I just ask them to please provide me the necessary equipment.

I will only do cord collection for parents that agree to wait for an amount of time before clamping.  It risks not having enough collection...but I'm not willing to short the baby for some potential future gain.  However, in 10?  12?  Collections, it's always been enough.  Even waiting several minutes.  Or, even forgetting to collect until after placenta delivered in a case with a baby needing PPV (left cord intact, obviously).

Do you have a midwife? If so she should be able to collect it. Mine was able to but she said that we'd have to cut the cord verrrry quickly to do it so we opted not to.

Another option you might want to consider is baby teeth banking.  There are stem cells in them that can be used.

Yes you can bank your baby's cord blood when you have a home birth.  Find a cord blood bank, such as Maze Cord Blood Bank www.mazecordblood.com and purchase a kit and it comes with all the instructions on how to  do it.  your midwife is more than capable of helping save the cord blood and send it to a bank.  If you are interested in finding out more about cord blood banking check out www.parentsguidecordblood.com  There is a comprehensive chart with many accredited banks, their fees and  prices.  Maze Cord blood provides the service for  a one time charge, with no annual fees.  THey also have a payment plan to help pay off the costs in a timely manner.
