what pump are you using?
Â
We use the Cadd Prizm pump.
Â
I want one with a charger instead of batteries so I'm always keeping my eye open when people talk about their IV pumps.

One HUGE word of wisdom that was very very painfully gained, make sure that you have an air sensor on your pump. They do NOT usually have them on and you usually have to ask for one. We found this out the hard way after a pulmonary air embolism. All it takes is 5 cc's of air through a central line to kill, so please please please make sure you have a sensor! My son survived 65 cc's of air (probably because his pump pumped one ml every second or so, so instead of building up it was just tons of tiny little emboli) and it was one of the worst days of my life. I woke up to him in respiratory distress and unconscious due to hypoglycemia and realized that his bag had come unspiked during the night (the Cadd doesn't have a pole clamp and so we had it sitting on his bedside table with the bag hanging from the IV pole next to the table). I called 911 and the fire dept and EMS showed up and once I started his feeds and the hypoglycemia had been fixed, he woke up and the respiratory distress calmed down after a while. The ER said they'd never had anyone survive that much air through a line and he was fine and went home a few hours later. The respiratory distress was the little air bubbles going through his lungs backwards.

So please, call your IV company and get an air sensor.
