we're switching from gravity infusion to a pump because of clotting issues.

but now, i'm getting an error message "insert slideclamp"

i've looked through the manual and i'm just not finding what this means.

i tried moving the slideclamp but ummmm...i'm just not getting what it means.

what pump are you using?

We use the Cadd Prizm pump.

I want one with a charger instead of batteries so I'm always keeping my eye open when people talk about their IV pumps.

One HUGE word of wisdom that was very very painfully gained, make sure that you have an air sensor on your pump. They do NOT usually have them on and you usually have to ask for one. We found this out the hard way after a pulmonary air embolism. All it takes is 5 cc's of air through a central line to kill, so please please please make sure you have a sensor! My son survived 65 cc's of air (probably because his pump pumped one ml every second or so, so instead of building up it was just tons of tiny little emboli) and it was one of the worst days of my life. I woke up to him in respiratory distress and unconscious due to hypoglycemia and realized that his bag had come unspiked during the night (the Cadd doesn't have a pole clamp and so we had it sitting on his bedside table with the bag hanging from the IV pole next to the table). I called 911 and the fire dept and EMS showed up and once I started his feeds and the hypoglycemia had been fixed, he woke up and the respiratory distress calmed down after a while. The ER said they'd never had anyone survive that much air through a line and he was fine and went home a few hours later. The respiratory distress was the little air bubbles going through his lungs backwards.

So please, call your IV company and get an air sensor.

oh my!  that must have been a terrible experience!  i'm so glad your son beat the odds!

it's a baxter flo-gard 6201.

thanks for the advice.  it appears to have the air sensor sensitive to 50microl, far below the 5cc cutoff.

so far, it's not terribly different from a hospital pump.  it clamps to the side of the table etc.

one thing i have noticed is that it seems out of proportion heavy compared to the pole.  do you know if there is a way to use the same tubing for gravity infusion as the pump?  we still have 5 or 6 sets of gravity infusion tubing.

thanks :)

I think the tubing is pump specific, at least ours is. This is our pump, it's tiny so I don't really know anything about the weight issue.

WOW! your pump is so tiny!  her pump weighs 14 lbs.  it's a regular hospital type pump.
