DH has talked about wanting an ipad and also really thinks that I would enjoy one. I've looked at the Apple website and as far as I can tell it's just an oversized iphone that can't make phone calls. Am I correct? Is there any other use for them aside from browsing the internet, watching movies and playing games?Â

We have one, and I was on the fence about it but I love it
Â
I let DD play games on it, and they have a lot of neat preschool things. Interactive books, memory games, puzzles, etc.
Â
I use it for browsing when I don't have a computer -- so if I need a recipe I can have it in my kitchen and use the Epicurious application.
Â
If you like word games and such, it's great for that
Â
Earlier this week, I heard a tech reporter on the news suggesting that the next generation, probably arriving early next year sometime, will have a bunch of additional features. Features like expandable memory, a camera and webcam for video conferencing. Â If you aren't entirely convinced that you want/need one right away, then you may want to wait.
Â
Even if you don't want the fancier version, when it arrives the price on new and used (Craigslist) first generation iPads will drop.Â
Â
We've been debating an iPad for a while now, and I think we will wait a little longer since we've waited this long.Â

We had one briefly. I didn't like it. I have an iPhone. I have a Macbook Pro. The iPad was just redundant, and couldn't do a lot of the things I like to do when I am browsing the internet(like have multiple tabs open and running and viewable to me at all times). It just wasn't worth the inconvenience for me.Â
Â
But then again, some people love it. So.... To each their own.
Â
Oh, I guess it would also be cool if you want to download books and read them on a device(like a Kindle or Nook) but I don't like that, either. I like good old-fashioned paper books. So there wasn't any benefit there, either.Â

I love mine. I have an imac, iphone 4 and the 3g ipad. I personally have no need to make calls, take pictures or video conference on the ipad. It does exactly what I need it to do, it runs the itunes apps I love. The maps app is much better on ipad than iphone, and so is web browsing. For me it's replaced about 90% of what I'd use a laptop for in a much more portable and lighter package. The only thing it can't do for me is run World of Warcraft LOL.

I LURVE my iPad. It's all I have, I don't have an iPhone (rather dislike that phone company) or a Mac (yet).
Â
But I needed a new iPod (mine was a 2001 brick) and wanted an eReader, so for $100 more I got the smallest gig iPad. It's wonderful.Â
Â
I have the keyboard and use it for word processing. Can't wait to try it next semester for notes in class.Â
Â
And I have a dication app that I am experimenting with.Â
Â
Yes it's used for games, but I use it mostly for reading emails on a bigger screen than my Palm and for reading books so I don't have to find room in my already overflowing bookcases (and not freak out the librarians every time I walk in with my 10-20 interlibrary loan requests a month).
