Hey people who live in cold weather! - Page 2

Re. the drafty windows, you can get (here at least) this plastic film that you cover the inside of the windows with.  You tape all around with double-sided tape (it comes in a kit with the plastic), then stick the clear plastic film to it, and then use a hair dryer to kind of "shrink wrap" it so it's taut.

Another Canadian here. It can get really cold -40C at times. We definitely have to heat our house (I think that goes for all of Canada). I follow the one extra layer rule. To go outside we usually have long johns under the kids clothes, a winter jacket (the to -40C ones) mittens, toques, etc. Also on really really really cold days we usually have warnings to not stay outside for long....frost bite can occur in minutes.

I don't believe California gets any snow/ or very little. Prehaps a onsie under dc's sleeper, and a light jacket for outside, and a hat. That should be good.

I learned somewhere or another that babies have immature circulatory systems, so your child may actually be warmer than you think.  We use that plastic wrap stuff on the windows (you can buy it anywhere, like Lowe's or another home improvement center).  It is very cheap and you tighten it to the windows with a hair drier.  Keeps drafts out.  Good luck!

Yep, an Alaskan here. Fortunately, my DS runs hot like his dad. If he was like me, he would run cold, so I can relate momma. I found a great sleep sack that is like wearing a quilt, with arms.

Ds was getting cold at night because we sleep in front of a drafty window. It is the only corner we can push the bed up to since we cosleep and he is on the end. Anyway I found him a sleepsack at the thrift store the other day and he is staying so much warmer at night. He kept crawling out of his covers before and then waking up cold. He's still scooting about the bed but is much warmer with the sack on and sleeping better.

I would suggest trying to come up with ways to warm up the house, like the plastic on the windows. Some other ideas would be to use draft dodgers along the doors and maybe windows. Hanging heavy curtains or lining current curtains with another layer, flannel sheets work well.

I now live in Colorado and although it can get quite cold here, 20's and into the teens. I never get as cold as when I lived in the northwest. I think the Bay area is similar in that it can be a damp cold, which is harder to warm up and stay warm in, imo.

I live in Bogota and it is VERY similar to the weather in the hills in Santa Barbara, CA.  On sunny days it can get up to about 80 degrees and drop down to about 40 or less at night.

We also have no heating in our house.

Out babe gets a onesie (short sleeve) and a fleecy all in one footed PJ with a hood.  We have about 5 of these in rotation.

That keeps her warm enough. I usually tuck her under a fleece blanket as well...but she usually kicks this off by 1 am anyway.

I live in Canada, and it is already cold. Even in the winter, we keep my house cool. We cosleep, so the baby stays quite warm, but when he goes down for a nap, I put him in a sleepsack. During the day, I put him in a pair of sweatpants, long-sleeves, but not a sweater, just a cotton onesie and I also put him in socks with Robeez slippers, as his feet always tend to be cold.
