Hip carriers? Any other options besides Scootababy?

Any Scootababy users out there? Or any other hip carriers? Especially for older/bigger babies? Give me your reviews!

Our 20-pound 12-month-old has recently started to complain about being worn on back OR front for longer periods of time (I think it's boring and he can't see what we see - he's heavy enough now that the "fix" of a high back carry in a MT isn't very comfy for either of us over longer carries). When we carry him on our hips, he quiets right down, but I don't love a hip carry in the ergo or ring sling.

Hands down, I would recommend a ring sling. A good one. I used an SBP ring sling that was made from a Girasol wrap. It was awesome. It's really adjustable. And it's not complicated like a dedicated hip carrier AND you can use it in other ways if you need to. It also offers you options to support your child if they fall asleep while in it.

I have never found a ring sling comfortable...but I use the hip hold on the ergo with my son who is at least 18 lbs and I find it really comfortable.  I am tall with a small frame.

every ring sling i used was uncomfortable EXCEPT the lightly padded maya wrap. i love it!!!!! seriously and its so beautiful. DD is obsessed with it and shes 14 m/o

also you could try a mei tei

idk what a scootababy is.

i personally like more tradition carriers instead of the modern strap and buckles and all that annoying junk lol

or just use a wrap that is 2.5 ft or so and tie the babe onto you.

or do a shawl carry. www.wearyourbaby.com has great info. go to videos and it will show you some hip carries

A Gemini, but the strap configuration would be similar to the Ergo I think. Also the back is only 14 inches, so it seems more suited for younger babies (or perhaps just not long babies). It does have a max of 35 pounds though. For what it's worth, my Scootababy is very good for hip carries and my son is 23 pounds. It's just tough when he falls asleep as it is one shouldered, but that would not be in a hip carry (that he sleeps). Are you concerned about the age/size and the Scootababy being one shouldered?

Yes, exactly- I was wondering if the weight distribution was doable with a taller/heavier baby, or if it was really just for tiny ones. Sounds like it's a good option, though. Thanks!

Other posters, thanks, but a hip carry in a ring sling, as I mentioned, isn't comfy for us.

Yes, I think it works (so far). My son is about 32 inches and so long as he is close to my body it feels comfortable in a hip carry. However sleeping in a front carry is tough as he feels heavy without two shoulder support.

i really like my scootababy for trips to the store or when ds is wanting up and down a lot at home. i can't wait to try it at the zoo when the weather warms up. i find it super easy to use, but it is definitely not as comfy for me as other carriers, but i think it's just because i have a shorter torso with wide hips, so SSCs are always a little awkward for me.
