Wishing there was a "Finding Your Tribe" right here in Learning at Home and Beyond.

I was just thinking about this. We belong to quite a few local homeschool yahoo groups, networks, etc. but I spend so much time on here (my main homeschool message board resource) that I was just thinking how nice it would be to have a finding your tribe JUST for us homeschoolers. Anyone else think this could be a good idea?

We are in San Diego, for example. I think it'd be neat to be able to connect directly with other Mothering.com homeschoolers.

I'm so glad to hear someone else thinks so too! I remember when we were moving from Hawaii to San Diego this past summer, I posted about San Diego, and someone suggested to check "Finding Your Tribe", and I did, BUT the problem is I don't even go much outside this section of the site these days, simply because my passion lies with homeschooling at the moment. At the time, I thought "but I just want to find other homeschoolers from mothering, not necessarily everyone else who's a member", yet I never thought about how to verbalize that until now.

Anyway, I truly do hope this could be something considered for the board. I think it would be a huge benefit!

They've got this new "Turn this post into a wiki" feature. Maybe a sticky thread could be made, with comments for individual areas that people could add themselves (and maybe link to/information about local resources, as well) to.

I'm in Northern Nevada (vaguely Reno-ish).

I don't think this is the kind of thing we use wikis for, although you could post in Questions and Suggestions and ask. The thing is, we're just not that big of a homeschooling board, and the odds of finding someone local to you here would be pretty long.

That said, I did meet one of my very best friends here on this very homeschooling board - at the time we lived about 40 minutes from each other, but then we moved and wound up living only ten minutes apart for two years (and then I moved 5 hours away, but I do visit her every few months!). I've found that a good way to find people here who are local to you is to use the location feature on your profile to state your location, and if you notice another poster who is close to you and seems like someone you might hit it off with, send her a PM! 

You can also post in FYT and say that you're looking for other homeschoolers, or do a search of your tribal subforum for the word homeschool and see if anyone has posted about it there...

Well we're in San Diego, too! But I'm pretty sure we said hi over in FYT :)  I do know of a few HSing groups if you're looking, but they are definitely north county.  Plenty of them all around here, though.

Great idea! we live in Gladstone, Oregon which is a few miles south of Portland. We have lived in S.E. and N.E. Portland and hope to get back up to that area in a year or two.

I am in Rexburg, Idaho.  I am pretty sure there are not many MDC members around here, and probably even less that HS, but I can keep hoping.

I UNDERSTAND! I am in South central Nebraska and there are 2 other homeschool families in town... I doubt they have ever thought about MDC or even along those lines. How I dream of like minded citizens... not consumers gathering together in real life!
