present for 10 year old boy

My partners nephew is turning 10 and I am really stuck about a gift for him.

I had thought of an outdoor activity book and a penknife but my partner balked at the idea of a knife and the 10 yo's mum said just to give him money. She says that he is selling all his toys and has a flat screen tv and video games in his room bigeyes.gif and won't really appreciate anything other than money (I won't go into how I feel about that but you can imagine)...

so we are giving him money this time but I don't want to do that for christmas too. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of something like an airfix kit?

Thanks for any suggestions

Last year for Christmas my brother gave my son who was ten at the time a small one of these things:

He really loved it (still does), but then he's a pretty science-y/nature-y type kid.

Me, I'd sooner give a gift certificate to a bookstore than straight cash.

Good luck.
