I have to wonder though, why anyone would want to go to a pedi who has a totally differing view on vaccinating? I suppose if that's like the only doctor in your town or something practical like that, then I get it. But otherwise, we can choose who we go to. I mean, for us that was one of the most essential things in seeking out a pediatrician: what are their views on / what are they willing to do or not do with vaxing?
Â
ETA: I'm in Germany so I think the situation is different here. We're in a big city and there are many, many pedis who prefer not to vaccinate, or to wait at least a year. I think in the US there are certain towns where there simply aren't pedis willing not to vaccinate, let alone who actually discourage it. Right?
Â
Aside from that, I can see how issues and differences could arise that you might not be able to predict, and that's another story.

We haven't been fired but I sometimes would love to fire him!!! Even though we are in California it is impossible to find an attachment selective/delayed vax friendly doc who takes HMO. All the good docs with the great reputations simply don't take any insurance or PPO only. I spent so much time looking for and interviewing pediatricians and it is hard because we can't just switch or try someone out as it is a formal act where we have to have it approved, get a new card and so on. I would love to be in Germany again  like the previous poster where you can refer yourself and choose your own doctor without any limitations like a medical group and all the other nonsense that is practiced over here and is so frustrating. So I haven't had it happen but can very well imagine it happen or at least being with a provider who does not support your parenting choices. I have called offices who told me straight on the phone they don't take babies / parents who are not or don't vax!!!

I see you're in Cologne. We should meet!
Â
And we got a great ped who is not a slave to the vax schedule. I feel really lucky since I think doctors in general in Germany aren't too comfortable with empowered patients.

We're in FL and it's $180 for a well child visit. Â Still waiting on about $800 worth of insurance reimbursements since the MD's office doesn't handle that at all. Â They've really got you over a barrel when they're the only ones in the area who are ok with not vaccinating.

@ PJ :) I think we already emailed I used to live in Cologne. And had great doctors there. Sigh. Never had the feeling the better doctors don't take public insurance where as I believe here the more sensitive and alternative orientated docs just don't bother with HMO. Never had the experience that empowered patients in general were not appreciated though. I think German docs take a more direct stand when it comes to treatment where as here they don't like to give direct recommendations so they can't get sued if the patient isn't happy with the outcome.Â

We've been fired. We had just moved to town and I booked my ds1 an appointment with a doc who was a ped but worked w/i a family practice clinic. Ds had a terrible ear infection and, right as the doc was walking out the door, he asked if ds was up to date on his vaccines. I said no, he said he wouldn't see us further. I found another ped who would see us but gave me a guilt trip every time I took either of the boys in (this was when I only had my oldest two). Last spring, a third ped opened up a practice here and she is a believer in vaccines but she doesn't care when you do them or if you do them, as long as you are educated. We are a selective/delay family, so I told her my game plan and she's on board. Love her.
