What stitch patterns are warmest when felted?

Would doing 1x1 ribs or seed stitch make for a warmer fabric than straight stockinette?  Or some other stitch pattern?

 

I'm making DH a felted hat, and it needs to be WARM.  Water resistant is a big plus, too.

Garter stitch seems to be pretty thick when its felted.
