S/O What are the worst holiday stories you have ever read/watched?

I read the other holiday stories thread and all I could think about were these two stories...which I HATE:

O'Henry's "Gift of the Magi".  Geesh people, communicate with each other much?  What a sad tale of misbegotten relationship martyrdom.  It bugs the crap outta me.

Hans Christian Anderson's "The Fir Tree."  OMG what a sick story.  Honestly though all of his stories make me want to vomit...but this one.  BLUrgh.

Aww, I liked Gift of the Magi. They were sweeties. (And really, compared to O Henry's other stories, this one was incredibly cheery...) What's The Fir Tree about?

Basically the Fir Tree is about a tree in the forest that wants to be more.  So he gets picked to be a Christmas tree, but that's not enough for him.  It's cool but he wants more.  Then when Christmas is over he is tossed away and slowly dies thinking longingly about being in the forest once more.

Yuuuuuck.  Way to make people feel like complete crap during the holiday season.

Here it is.  You've been warned.

Well, IMO all the variations of The Little Match Girl are pretty darn depressing and horrible.

Isn't that another Hans Christian Anderson story?  I swear most of his stuff is not suitable to read.

Yes, it is.  And the movies are always done as a Family thing.  Yeah, because nothing says "Joyous Family Christmas" like a movie about a homeless orphan who freezes to death in the cold.

Heh - I like the Little Match Girl too. :p The Fir Tree, though... that's just weird.

although maybe not suitable as holiday fair, those stories are suppose to help people remember to be grateful and enjoy what they do have. alot of buddha's stories are like that. letting go, being content, being grateful for what you have. you can always want more, but it won't always make you happy to have more.

Sure, but I think there is a way to do that without being brained by the moral.  I just think these stories are so over the top.

Also depressing...the christmas Shoes.

Boy buys shoes for his dying mother on Christmas.  Tearjerker.  Is also a sappy country song.

I am not enamoured with most versions of the Christmas Carol - but my DH is, so go figure.

Ooh, is it time for a Christmas Shoes thread?  They are always fun!

The station that plays Christmas songs is now banned in the car with my DH as it started off his holiday season with the Christmas Shoes song.

 :)

Ooh, I'm ready for the annual Christmas Shoes hate-a-thon. That is the worst piece of holiday tripe EVER!

No offense to those who enjoy tripe.

Then they made it a movie?! It made me want to take a spork to my eyes and eardrums.
