NFP before 1st PPAF?

I gave birth to my 1st child about four months ago and am exclusively breastfeeding him. I had some late-postpartum bleeding (off and on later than 6 weeks pp) and was warned to consider myself potentially fertile. So no using LAM for me! Is it possible to use NFP? We used the billings method (cervical mucus) before, but how would I use NFP now when I have no idea when I'd ovulate?

hi--
I am nearly 12months pp and no AF in sight. My obgyn told me not to rely on NFP until cycles returned, but I think she just didn't want me to have to deal with the 'work' of charting. According to my NFP bible, you would have to take temps, check cervical mucus, and be extra attentive to other signs if you wished to avoid conception. That being said, I think you could use NFP if you felt strongly it was what you wanted, no matter what. I have noticed personally a slow return to my prepregnancy fertility pattern, but w/o no ewcm and no AF. And I am sort of mad because I wish I could have convinced DH that exclusive breastfeeding was birth control enough.

you might check www.cclil.org for some additional NFP info.

I used it just fine after AJ was born and we were bfing (still are). You just have to follow the same guidelines are before, if you have fertile cm, consider yourself fertile and wait 3 days etc. The problem I had was that I had fertile cm all the time! My teacher really helped distinguish a pattern though and figure out fertile from non-fertile. There was also a huge difference in my cm when I Oed the first time!
