When did your babe's tongue thrust disappear? Update question post 14 with rant about my ped. - Page 2

Sometimes even the ones who think they are being supportive of breastfeeding, aren't.  My DS's family doc was the same at 4 months with the 'have you started rice cereal?' questions.  My answer continues to be "we are exclusively breastfeeding until at least 6 months, following all the current guidelines."  I say it EVERY SINGLE TIME he mentions feeding.  At our 9 month check I will say "we are breastfeeding until at least 2 years, and are now introducing nutritious complementary foods, following all the current guidelines."  And he thinks breastfeeding 'is great'!

I will be like water on a stone.  Relentless!

So please do not feel that you are alone in this.  We are all fighting the same battle to some degree.  Breastfeeding Mamas Unite!

For what it's worth, my 7 month old nurses whenever he asks and even sometimes when he forgets to ask, and eats solids once a day.  'Eats' is generous - I really should say 'is offered'.

With any latch issues I think getting a good check for tongue-tie is worthwhile.

Thanks for the replies. DH and I spent some time today on Kellymom and I downloaded Baby Led Weaning to my kindle... I feel fine about my decision to not spoon feed her and I'm sticking to it. We did decide to get an eval with the OT- if there is any chance she could fix the latch I'd be in 7th heaven and I would know for sure how long our breastfeeding relationship will last. I'd love to do CLW but can't picture it at the moment because of nipple pain. Def not worried about the thrust any more. She's not ready for food on other levels as well, so, we'll try again in a few weeks with blw.

:)

FYI, there is a great thread on tongue-tie in the breastfeeding challenges resource sticky.  You may want to take a look to see if anything sounds familiar.  Posterior tongue-ties are difficult to diagnose if you do not have experience with them, so the OT may never have heard/seen one and not know what to look for.

Also, thumbsup.gif to you!  Breastfeeding in pain is HARD - I am in awe.  I hope you can get some resolution soon.

Semi-hijacking here...

My DD had a posterior tie. It was cut, but we continued to have nursing issues. We went to OT for a couple of months as she had a very weak suck, high palate, and an oversensitive gag reflex, refusing to draw the nipple into her mouth enough to nurse correctly. We were released from therapy before things were really "fixed", and the SLP warned us that we may have issues when introducing solids later down the line. She said that it's typical for babies to gag the first time a new food is introduced, but gagging after that is a sign that maybe her old issues weren't resolved or are coming back.

So to answer the first part: yes, latch and tongue-tie and solids issues can all be related.

DD is almost 8 months old and solids are totally confusing me. We waited about 6 months and started rice cereal, which she hated. A month later we tried again, and she loved it: seemed to transfer and swallow well, etc., but then vomited/gagged it all up 3 hours later. This week we tried banana and she's constantly gagging on it, even when totally mashed.

I wouldn't worry about it except that she's had feeding issues in the past and has slowly been slipping off her curve (which was on the small side to begin with given her early feeding issues - she's about 14 lbs now). I do feel like we have finally hit our stride in the nursing department, so that helps, but I'm not sure where the line is between waiting on solids because she's "not ready" and ignoring issues that need to be addressed?
