Little People Toys,

Thread Starter

Does anyone know what the Little People figures are made out of, they are made out of what seems to be a softer plastic..... they smell kinda shower curtain-y to me; LO received the ark set and barn set as gifts..... any ideas if they contain PVC?    They look so cute but my LO loves to munch on them so if they have PVC or something else harmful they are going to have to go, I'm kinda bummed!

Hmmm, this is what I found with a Google search...

I found this

http://www.thisoldtoy.com/fisher-price/dept-7-playsets/b-chunky-LP/chunky.html

it says the little people made before 1997 were made of PVC, but then it says that then 97 FP made another change, but it doesn't say if they changed the plastic or not.

This site has levels of various chemicals in toys, http://www.healthystuff.org/departments/toys/ and there are several little people sets listed.

Oh man why did I look at that site?!

How on earth are we supposed to know what toys are safe? DS has one plastic toy & I looked it up & it has (low, but still there) levels of lead, arsenic, etc.!! But then when I look up various wooden toys some of them are just as bad!!!! WHYYYYYYY?! Is there any way to know you're getting a 'safe' toy???

I wonder about those lists. The one that lists toys with no chemicals detected shows thomas wooden railway. I had several pieces from our thomas wooden railway set that were recalled for lead paint. I guess they must have forgotten about, not tested, overlooked, etc. the couple dozen recalled items when creating these lists. It's important to realize that even if one toy in a set tests safe it does not mean every item is safe.

edited to add:

I looked again and it seems that they only tested two pieces out of a collection that includes hundreds of pieces yet their list simply says 'thomas wooden railway' as having no chemicals.... rather misleading.

This is giving me a headache.

Since my kids are past the age of putting toys into mouths, I don't worry that much about what's in them. They mostly play with non-toy things anyway and I'd drive myself to licking oranges on the wallpaper if I looked up every toy I ever bought them or wanted to buy them. I'll stick to worrying about things that I put on my kids' skin daily (ie, body wash and shampoo) and things that are made to keep them safe (ie car seats).
