DD1 (2 1/2) and I managed to make it through my pregnancy and come out the other side still nursing. (YEAH US!). However, sometime between the beginning of my pregnancy and now, her latch had changed. I dismissed it previously as pregnancy discomfort, and simply toughed out the sharp, biting type pains. BOY was I wrong. I have zero pain when nursing DD2 (ony 5 days old), which is why I am sure there is something more to this. At the beginning of every nursing session with DD1 everything feels okay. No pain, etc. Then, somehow during the session, her latch changes and it feels like her eye teeth are pinching me on 1 side of her mouth or the other. I will point out that in our family, we have exceptionally long and pointy eye teeth.

I have tried talking to her about it. I always tell her when she is doing it right. But it is almost like my nipple shifts in her mouth and then there's no way to get it right again. I have tried taking her off and relatching her. I have tried having her open her mouth wide. I have tried different positions and switching sides (which works momentarily), but it is always the same. Sometimes we can nurse longer than other times before it gets lazy, and sometimes its only a few seconds. I am at my wits end. This last nursing session ended with both of us crying. Me because of the pain, and her because I simply had to say no more.

I don't want to wean. It isn't an option I'm willing to consider. But, I can't tough this out either. So, does anyone have any advice/suggestions? Has anyone been there and come up with a solution? The only thing I can think of is to have her teeth filed down, but perhaps there is some other way? I hate to have to deal with the grumbling I'll get from her new dentist if this is what I want (they aren't very breastfeeding friendly), but think it is a small price to pay for nursing peace.

Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.
