How much was your fetal ultrasound?

I am having a fetal anatomy scan/ultrasound in two days at almost 20 wks. I am just wondering if anyone has had one recently and if they know about how much the fee was? I'm thinking our insurance won't cover it and I forgot to ask how much it was when the appt. was made. Thanks!

Ours was 150 and I was shocked to find out our insurance actually paid out 120.  I was expecting nothing, since usually they're good for nothing.  It's worth a try to put in a claim.

Mine too was just about 150. But insurance paid it all.

Mine was apparetnly $360, but insurance said heck no too expensive, so after the adjustments it's $202 and I get to pay that since I have a high deductible plan.

I tried to look mine up, but BCBS doesn't like me today. @@

I can't imagine why an insurance company would deny the claim.  The 20wk u/s is considered a pretty routine test.  Unless your policy excludes maternity, I don't know why it wouldn't be covered (minus whatever copays and deductible you have).

I had my 20 week U/S today & I saw $595.  Are U/S's more expensive for multiples?  I am pg w/ twins

Between $180=$256 according to the paperwork I have. You should tell them your insurance doesn't always pay for things and ask if they have any experience coding it so it will go through more smoothly.

Mine was $399, but insurance covered about half. We have to pay $212.

Mine was about $750 (you can imagine my face when I got the bill,) insurance covered about $400 of it.

$300-something, covered 100% by insurance, yay!

IME, yes, they are more expensive. Assume it is bc they are longer than a singleton US, but there might just be a multiple charge bc healthcare works like that :P Someone mentioned to me that my insurance might start throwing a hissy fit bc of the multiples, but I haven't seen it yet (ours is reeeeaaally slow to bill) and I don't see how they could do that, yk?

ETA: OP, agree w/ pp that if you have maternity coverage, I don't see how they could decline the anatomy scan as long as you have it done at a covered facility. It is generally considered a standard practice (tho, that certainly doesn't mean they'll cover the whole thing, obviously) I'd call them and check if you are worried.

Wow!  Every time I read a thread about US medical costs, I have a renewed appreciation for the universal medicare system we have in Canada.  Now, I recognize that my taxes are substantially more (we lose about 40%+ of each pay cheque), but I was out of pocket $10.50 for 20w ultrasound.  None of the costs were associated with the ultrasound itself.  We opted to pay $3 for a photo and parking was $7.50.  What I can't believe is the variation in costs above.  That is just crazy.

Our pics were $11.30 ($10 + 13% sales tax here in NB)...but we lucked into a parking meter with 2 hours left on itthumb.gif

I just went through a bunch of detective work to answer this question for myself. My doctor had me scheduled for a level II, 20-week ultrasound at a specialist center. I ended up canceling because it turned out it would have cost close to $1000, and my insurance wouldn't cover it. The way I figured this out for sure was by asking the medical center for the billing and diagnosis codes that had been used when my doctor ordered the ultrasound. I then called the insurance claims department to verify. It wasn't a big deal to get the necessary information from the medical center.

In my case, it wasn't covered because the doctor had not established "medical necessity" and I had already had my allotted one ultrasound per pregnancy (call your insurance and they'll tell you how many you get--beyond that one, my insurance will only cover if it is deemed "medically necessary"). So instead, we are opting for the lower-resolution in-office ultrasound. I'm going to ask my doctor to try to bill it in such a way that they'll cover it, but if not, the fee is around $250.
