f my 8 year old likes Secrets of Droon and ABC Mysteries...?

My oldest will be 8 years old a week after xmas.  I'm trying to think of a good non-toy gift for him.  He loves to read and often gets Secrets of Droon and ABC Mysteries books from the library.  I wouldn't want to buy him books from either of those series, since he's read a lot of them already, but am thinking of getting a set from a new series.  I looked on Amazon the other day and came up with Geronimo Stilton, The Secret Series and 39 Clues series.  Can anyone recommend any of those?  Which would be best.  He is in 2nd grade, but is a very good reader.  He seems to like mystery and adventure, but doesn't like things that are too, too scary.  I'm thinking 39 Clues might be a little too old for him just yet, but I'm not sure.  Any thoughts and ideas are welcome.

The Geronimo Stilton books are total fluff, but they are fun, safe reading and parody lots of other genres. Just a warning, though, kids go through them FAST. He might be ready for Percy Jackson. I think they are actually less scary than 39 clues and take slightly longer to read. Oh, and if has hasn't read them yet, the Spiderwick Chronicles are very popular with kids that age.
