Ideas to get DS1 to *actually* close the deep freeze door after getting something out would be greatly appreciated.

How about a shelf above so it never opens enough that it holds itself open?  Makes it kinda awkward for digging around, though.

:fingersx for beans, cs!!

My gran knew a couple whose child froze to death because he accidentally fell into the freezer and it had a shelf above it that kept it from staying open. She'd always make sure that I had my winter coat on before asking me to get anything and would set an egg timer for 10 minutes. Resultingly, it's kind of a phobia of mine. I'm not as paranoid about it as my gran was but DS1 isn't allowed to go in the freezer if I'm not awake and he's not allowed access to the freezer without telling anyone... but I still couldn't impede it from staying open.

OMG!  That's terrible JR. :(  I don't blame you for being paranoid.

gah.  NO sleep last night.  I've been really working on getting DD to stay in her own bed all night (which is right next to ours), so I'm often putting her back in and tucking her in when she tries to climb in with us.  Last night, I noticed she was tossing and turning before I even went to sleep, and she was up in our bed shortly after (but I had just fallen asleep, and couldn't wake up enough to take her back.  Anyway... she tossed and turned ALL.NIGHT.LONG, and had to be right up against me.  So I think I woke up about every 5 minutes.  Finally gave up and just got out of bed... so here I am.  About to get some hours in for work, which I need... but I'd rather be sleeping.  orngtongue.gif

So- I'm pretty sure that cane sugar is out.  Wednesday, we had the lollipop naked crazy incident, and yesterday I gave her a few chocolate chips (at lunchtime!) and then no sleep last night.  arg.  I guess we're down to lamb, veggies and honey now.  :(

omg... that BETTER not be her that I hear getting out of bed right now.  I will absolutely lose it.

Consequences. Take away videogames or TV or computer time. Make sure he knows the consequences ahead of time. Or just don't let him get anything out of it (which makes it more of a pain for you, since you have to do it.

Are you sure it's the cane sugar and not the beans?

So last night I got some of the Food for Life brown rice bread. It's got xanthan gum so we've never tried it before. DS and DD2 really liked it (they each had a slice last night) and were fine last night. So that's another corn derivative that looks/seems okay. Still not ready to try corn tortillas though, no matter how much I want them. We're going to stick with the derivatives for a while and see what that opens up.

Also when I was at WF the other day I bought chia seeds. Anybody know what I do with them for an egg replacement? In the Book of Yum sorghum onion rolls that I made (making a cinnamon roll version this morning) instead of making the flax eggs in the microwave, she has you put 2 Tbs. of milled flax and 3/4 c. of water in the blender and blend until creamy. So I may try that next time I make my regular bread recipe and see if I can get more height out of mine. It seems to really rise well and you get the little air pockets like regular bread.

Off to go grocery shopping with DD1 while DS stays here with DS and DD2. He's moving DS's bed (which he made into a bridge loft a couple years ago) to loft on the side, because it's a pain to have to keep ducking under it all the time. I hope the stores aren't too crazy today. We're not doing anything special tonight, though DH, DD1 and I will probably stay up. I'll put the younger kids to bed earlier though.

Yeah... I've noticed the last few times I've given her chocolate chips, she's slept horribly.  Could be the chocolate too I guess.  Although with the lollipop craziness, I'm inclined to think it's the sugar.  Night before last (with beans later in the day), she slept through the night- didn't wake up once!  But who knows really.  I'm giving them a couple more days, then we'll stop and retrial them in a week or two.

Yay on the corn derivatives!!!  joy.gif joy.gif joy.gif joy.gif joy.gif joy.gif

Yikes! Is he actually getting inside?? Our freezer came with a little plastic key so you can lock it shut to prevent kids from playing in there. Does yours have anything like that? Maybe give DS1 the key around his wrist or neck or something and make sure to ask when he gives/puts it back upstairs?

Dd is sick. Congested plus fever. And her nursing officially drives me nuts. It probably doesn't help that her nursing usually means I'm reacting eyesroll.gif But that has me trying to figure out how to get nutrition into her. She is clearly getting a lot of her nutrients (vs calories) from milk, and it's clearly not enough, given how many times she's been sick lately. We've been talking about food choices and nutrients and stuff, and she's actually open to the concept of supplements now bigeyes.gifjoy.gif but (kids awake)

No, I meant "go in" like "get things out of" no actually physically climb into.

We've already tried "grounding" him from computer privileges. I wonder if there's a door alarm thing that'll go off as long as the door's open... I'm not certain where our keys are. I could do that too.

Yay for corn derivatives for Kathy! Boo for reactions for Shannon and J.

Excellent on the free tree and sale ornaments!!

The packaging just said pork w/ham (wth does that mean anyway?!), sugar, salt, nitrates. (I'm pretending I didn't see the nitrates.) mmmm

When I saw SPAM in the store today I picked it up and looked at it. It has potato starch too so it's out for DS, who is who'd be having it. Oh well. Was your DD okay with it? I didn't think she could do potatoes. Or was it just you having it? Or is it possible that they have different ingredients in different parts of the country? It wouldn't surprise me, really, if they did.

First alert makes "door alams" where the two pieces go on the door and the freezer. As long as the magnets are touching, it's quiet. As long as they're apart you can choose a doorbell sound (only rings once) or a siren sound. We had them for all the doors on the houseboat up at the lake when DS was little (before we put multiple locks on each door). We also have them siren-style on our basement windows in case anyone ever tried to open them from outside. They're not expensive and they have them at places like Walmart.

Went grocery shopping today (3 stores). Took 4 hours. I'm pooped but I got the stuff to make toffee for DD1 and maple walnut fudge for the rest of us. I really don't know if I can stay up until midnight.

I started coming down with something yesterday, went out with a friend for an afternoon mom-only outing and cancelled my evening thing, and then I missed everything in Chat.  And my knee is aching--I guess because of the knee brace?  Not sure, but it's annoying, between the knee and my back and my arm, I feel like, all of a sudden, I'm falling apart.

DS hasn't done this yelling thing at all today, even when a couple times I know he was really frustrated with DD--it's this weird, rage-filled sound (given that he's a basically happy 4-year old), it's not a normal yell, much more gutteral than a scream.  But he didn't end up in our bed last night and he seems quieter and he's talking better with DD, and overall he seems more normal.  Red dye is evil.  Next time I order supps, I think I'm going to just boost up his molybdenum a bit, figuring I depleted it (I assume it's that, given he gets a lot of B6 and mag).

Thanks for the heads up on the door alarms! Found them on Amazon, thanks to you. :)

Went to this local-ish craft shop today. (It's the next town over, where I go for counselling, but it's owned by a local from the town.) They had some cute flannel. It's so difficult to find good cloth! Where'd it all go? Silly mass production of clothing destroying access to cloth.

Grocery shopping is every Saturday here. We do 1 store per week, although we do the co-op as well as needed.  Usually takes between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. That's quite long enough for me.

I'm thinking a nap may be required here as well.

Sorry you're not well. Hope you're feeling better quickly.

And yes, I agree. Red dye IS evil... That's the one that, when DS1 ate it when he was little, caused him to think he could fly, throw himself down stairs, and attempt to jump off a 3rd story balcony. Fun times. (not)

Use half as much chia as you would flax, same amount of liquid. Grinds nicely in blender.

Dd wants capsules so I need to order some of those kitten caps. She won't drink her mango juice/B complex mix anymore and asked of she could take vitamins like I do. It would be GREAT if she did that!

Is it strange that 1/3 or more of my open tabs/windows are recipes?

Is it like bone pain or muscle pain? Does Magnesium help? Got any pineapple (bromelain is an anti-inflammatory) or make something with lots of turmeric (another anti-inflammatory)? Your DS sounds like he's recovering well from the dye!

I think all the fabric went to China/Hong Kong. That's where alot of the apparel manufacture is, so that's where they're making all the fabric too. Two grocery stores (Price Rite and Expect) are within a mile of each other. And they're both discount stores but Expect has all the Bob Red Mill stuff, and quinoa, and almond milk and things like that which Price Rite doesn't have, but it doesn't have any meat and a much smaller produce department, so I  get that stuff at Price Rite. And I had to go to Costco because we ran out of things like garbage bags and my Advil, which I need if I'm not going to get another UTI (which I felt like I was this morning but then it seemed to go away); I just need to remember to take it on a schedule. But that one is 40 minutes away. And I took DD1 with me to help, and she wanted to stop at Borders and spend a giftcard that she got at Christmas (mall was crazy). So it just took a while. I went to WF on Wednesday because it's a mile from the osteopath. But hopefully I won't have to go shopping again for 2 weeks. I'm trying to stretch it out to 2 weeks but I don't know if it'll work. Dinner prep took too much standing and now my back is really hurting so I guess I'll take a break and read for a little while before I do the fudge (see, I had to go to Costco to get my maple syrup so I could make the fudge!!). I got my sweet tooth back!

Doing a drive by.

Happy New Year Everyone.  I hope 2011 is a banner year for all of us.

And for those who can still eat pumpkin - You can get a case (12 cans) of organic pumpkin for $10.+ with subscribe & save (which you can cancel immediately after).  That's less than a dollar a can folks.  Whole Foods sells the same stuff for more than $2/can.

A friend of mine is asking about thyroid issues.  His sister is having a real problem, and was prescribed a gazillion meds she is refusing to take.  She wants to know about alternative methods.

So, where can they start reading?

Never did finish that thought, did I?  In the vein of the visual cookbook, and dd being sick, I was going to say I wanted to put together a picture book of healing foods.  Then ds took a looooong nap (hope he's not getting sick too!) and I got to hang out on the computer, creating a visual of inspiring food.  Not sure if I can post here, though, cause it's dh's new employer...

Nooooooo- it was just for me.  DD is allergic to pork.

Glad to hear your DS is doing better today Tanya.  Sorry about your knee.  I'm feeling your pain right now... My gigantic pregnant self walked around the zoo for 4 hours today, and my hip/knee/back is KILLING me.  I'm ready to go to bed right now.... gonna be a long night.  :)

eta:  oh yeah- and DD had a pretty bad day today.... so maybe it is the beans after all.  :(  Not that I should be surprised, but I was actually starting to get my hopes up.

So my friend's dd has a peanut allergy diagnosed by RAST by her primary hcp. Symptoms were constipation, rash, hives (once) and vomiting. She generally doesn't get all of thse symptoms at the same time, but I am a little freaked out about her developing anaphylaxis. I am really trying to urge my friend to go to an allergist and get an epi-pen. Anyone have a favorite link about anaphylaxis?
