My son just turned 1 this month. He weaned himself at 10 months and has been on Alimentum ever since due to milk and soy allergies. I would really like to find a milk to give him to replace some of the Alimentum at this point, and eventually completely replace it as we get eating figured out. Cow, soy and almond milk all give him a rash, cow and soy flare his eczema and cow milk causes immediate stomach pain. I have also tried both goat and hemp milk, which he started spitting up after about an hour of having each. Do you think that just the spitting up would count as a reaction since he doesn't usually spit up antmore, and if he does it's not that much? He didn't have any other reactions, but I was scared off by the spitting up and didn't give him any more. Or do I maybe just need to mix the goat or hemp milk with his formula to get him used to it before trying a bottle of it all by itself? I'm just so confused and frustrated.Â

And welcome to MDC!

Alot of kiddos that can't tolerate cow's milk have issues with both soy and goat's milk. Other's are fine with it. But, if your little one has started spitting up afterwards and he wasn't before, I would call it a reaction and stop them. Check the ingredients on the hemp milk and almond milks....they both sometimes have soy products in them!! It might not have been a reaction to the almond or hemp itself. They all also usually have careenagen in them, which is kelp derived, which some people are sensative to.

I agree, coconut milk is a good one to try as well. But, I agree with PP in that you can't replace formula with any of these milks completely.
I only want to replace probably 2 bottles a day with some other milk. He is drinking more formula than the doc reccomends right now so I don't think it should really be a problem, and it will make the formula stretch just a little longer. He has pneumonia right now though so he won't be getting anything other than formula and the occasional table food that he is willing to eat for a while. The almond milk I tried was Almond Breeze unsweetened and the hemp milk was Tempt from Living Harvest, vanilla because that's all I could find. I don't remember seeing any soy ingredients listed, but I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something. I had never heard of the caraanagen before. I think what is confusing me so bad is that he actually can eat most foods it seems without problem. Even soy ingredients that are baked in don't seem to bother him, only soy milk. So to have him react to so many different milks is just getting me. Though I've known about the cow milk and soy for a while due to trying to find a formula for him when he was younger, and I suspected the goat milk but figured it was worth a try.Â

If soy doesn't bother him but soymilk does, I would say it's probably another ingredient. Most of those alternative milks have a ton of ingredients in them.
