My unvaxed DS was exposed to Chicken Pox - a child in his classroom has a confirmed case. Should I keep him from attending any afterschool activities for 2 weeks just in case he caught it? Do they recommend isolation for vaxed kids who've been exposed? One child from his classroom is in his cub scout group, and one other from his class is in his Tae Kwon Do group so if I keep my kid out, it may spread anyway.

Send him to school.  My unvaxed child was exposed 2x before gettting the chicken pox.  He may or may not get them at all.  My VAX'd boys were exposed once and both got them.   GO figure ;)

In the absence of symptoms send him to school.

I might be remembering this incorrectly, but I thought the incubation period was at least a week, so that if you did want to quarantine (not saying you should or not) it would be for days 7-21, and not the week immediately following exposure.  Does anyone here know if this is right?

When my daughter was exposed (she didn't get them), it was my friends who don't vaccinate who were freaking out about being around her, because it "wasn't a good time" for their kids to get it, and my friends who vaccinate their kids for it who seemed unconcerned.  The complete opposite of what I thought I'd encounter.

Since this is an illness discussion rather than a vaccine discussion I'm moving to H&H. :)

I'd send him, if it was a child in his class, they'd have to either keep the entire class home from everything (since they were all exposed) or send them all in as usual... I don't think being vaxed or not is relavant since you could transmit the virus either way, and it seems crazy to think all the other kids in the class would stay home from everything.

I'd send him. Who knows if he'll even get it? I was exposed many times as a kid (I'm 44 so CP was much more prevalent back then) and never caught it. The only thing I would be cautious about is having him being around any pregnant women who never had chicken pox. Most adults have had it but a few haven't. So I'd mention it if any pregnant women helping out at his activities.
