The main consideration is that you purchase enough yardage to cut the full length of the doll pattern. For a 16" classic type Waldorf doll, this would be 24" or  2/3rds of a yard. I think this is why you see some sellers offering a cut of 3/4 yard instead of a full yard minimum. From this, your would get 4 dolls, if you are using a single layer. I'm not sure about other types of doll patterns, though- which one are you using? ETA: The grain line is super important and the doll must be cut out with the stretch going across the body, so that is why you need the full length- you can't cut across the goods and get a satisfactory result. The doll would end up really tall and skinny.Â

For the 16" classic Waldorf dolls I make, I use about 13"s of 2" stockinette, and a full pound of the wool batting, per doll. A classic Waldorf doll is supposed to be very firm and have a nice weight to it, so that is why you need the full pound of stuffing. Some doll makers use a lot less, though.
