December 2010 Book Thread - Page 2

don't know if i'll finish it in 2010, but i decided on Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver for my last novel of the year (and first novel in two months!  yikes.  work is getting in the way of my reading habit.)

enjoy your celebrations.

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

Heartbreaking teen novel about a girl and her family deported from Lithuania to Siberia by the Russians during WW II.

I just read the book "Committed" (by the author of Eat, Pray, Love).  I read it in under a day--it was an interesting memoir / long essay about the nature of Western marriage.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson

A light, enjoyable story of a widowed English major who begins to have feelings for a widowed Pakastani woman who owns a local convenience store. Can he stand being the subject of gossip and possible shunning in his conservative English community and can she go against her family's traditions. Very well done--the perfect vacation read.

How to Grow Up and Rule the World by Vordak the Incomprehensible

Middle-grade book about how to become a super-villian.

Half a Life by Darin Strauss

One reviewer called it "staggering and unforgettable," with which I completely agree.

It's a sad, compelling memoir about the author hitting a girl with his car and killing her.  (He didn't mean to, of course.)  In general, it's a book about what it means to live a life of grief, and it does end on as positive of a note as possible.

I liked this one better than E, P, L.

I actually have a couple more books to post for 2010! :D  I have to cut out of the office in a minute though, so I'll post 'em tomorrow.

#61 Tracks by Louise Erdrich

Beautiful and sad.  A story about how life continued to change for Native Americans at the beginning of the 20th century.  Her writing is lyrical and magical. I can't wait to read more of her books.

#62 Undressing the Moon by Tammy Greenwood

A teenager's account of her high school life and her mom leaving her family.  Sad, but good character development.  Super quick read.

#63 The Promise by Jonathan Alter

I enjoyed this book, although I am an Obama fan, so it was really fun for me to get into the details of his campaign and administration.
