This is much like our experience too.  We decorated the tree at night while the little ones (19-month-old twin boys) were sleeping.  We put the breakable ornaments toward the top and the less breakable ones at the bottom (though we misjudged a few, that were more fragile than we thought.  Oh well).  The first day, they kept taking ornaments off, the second day a little less.  And now they just leave them on and stand at look at the tree, pat it, etc.  Occasionally an ornament is removed, but no big deal.  I'm really glad we didn't decide to forego it, or to encase it in superyards or something, as it's worked out pretty well. (knock on wood!)

I've been working on dd with "those are just for pretty, we don't touch them" for lots of stuff for awhile. So at our friend's house, when dd was reaching for the "balls? balls!" I told her that they were for pretty and just for looking and she carefully walked around the tree with her hands at her sides. (I was ready to grab her, because with her moods lately, it was about 50/50 whether she'd look carefully or get mad and grab the ornaments with gusto.)

That's so cute sapphire. Good job! Because we went to A&W the other day and there was a tree, and everything was new and exciting, and ds was like "balls!" *rip*

Ugh. lol.
