Cleaning baby's teeth

My baby has 2 teeth and I recently started to think about how to clean them. A friend recommended just a warm wet washcloth, which seems like a good gentle approach for now.

I tried it the other day and was able to get the fronts done (with some effort) but whenever I try to reach to the back of the teeth the baby bites down, as expected.

I would like to start with god dental hygeine because I have heard of lots of babies getting cavities and I would like to avoid that if I can.

so any tips on cleaning a baby's teeth? how do you do the backs? is anyone successful at cleaning between the teeth (flossing)? At what age did you start cleaning the teeth?

I started cleaning the teeth when the babies starts getting them. I just buy a small toothbrush, they do make little brushes to go on your finger so you can do it that way. I usually lie the baby back in my arms and tile them down a bit when I want to do the backs, they think it is funny and open to smile.

We started to brush the little teeth once the teeth were out at 8 1/2 months. We have a toothbrush that goes on top of the finger and do it as part of the nighttime routine. Olivia likes it a lot. We also massage her gums a little bit. We do a lot of night nursing though so I guess the point of brushing the teeth is more to get the routine.

We've been using this product and it is great! DD is almost 11 months and is really good now about letting me brush her little chompers (i.e., no longer trying to bite me wink1.gif) We started out with the wet washcloth too but she got to a point where she would either suck on it or try to grab it out of my hands.

I bought a little toothbrush (Munchkin brand, I think) a few months ago.  It has a gum massager on it but I like using the toothbrush part so that she gets used to it as she gets older.  I just use water and she thinks it's great fun.  She laughs and opens wide when I get the brush out for her.
