not-for profit homeschool corp?

I'm just curious if a person could (or would) make their homeschool and not-for-profit private school and as such claim school supplies etc. on taxes?  Would that even work anywhere?

Where I live non-profit organizations need status as official societies with bylaws, boards of directors and so on. That's an expensive and time-consuming process that typically requires using a lawyer in order to create bylaws that will approved for charitable status. The finances are then directed by the board of directors, and bylaws need to ensure that directors are not benefitting personally / directly / financially as a result of the society's activities. Meaning you and your family could not be on the board. So while one could possibly theoretically set up a non-profit society to administer homeschooling fundraising and purchases, other people would have to be found to meet, elect a board, and administer the finances. It would have to be a totally arms-length arrangement.
