My husband is Swedish so we celebrate Lucia every year. I recommend checking your community for a Swedish Heritage School (think Saturday mornings), a Swedish Society or a Swedish Lutheran Church. They would all be hosting a Lucia celebration that you could attend.

You could even try learning the chorus of the most famous Lucia song.

Definitely talk about the darkness and the importance of the light. Lots of candles and some special baked treats will help set the mood. :)

I realized St. Lucia's Day has come and gone but I hope you don't me sharing a few ideas you might want to file away for next year. :)

*I made a Lucia Crown for my daughter to wear and a simple white pillowcase dress with a red ribbon sash so that she could dress up as St. Lucia for the special brunch we hosted for a group friends. I have pics of the crown here: http://berrybramblecottage.wordpress.com/2010/12/14/a-celebration-of-goodness-and-light/   There are also tutorials for needle felted Lucia crowns that are beautiful and one for a crown made out of heavy craft paper (we made this one in years past). Crowns can also be purchased from this website and then decorated with fresh greenery every year: http://www.hemslojd.com/xmas_lucia.html

*Costume gifts were made for the little ones who came to brunch so that they could help St Lucia with her tasks.

*Candles- We lit candles all around the house and had a fire roaring while we put the finishing touches on our brunch and read stories about light, St. Lucia, and Sweden.

*The highlight of breakfast was a braided bread crown topped with six beeswax candles.

*For crafts we made window stars to "catch the light" and made an assortment of molded beeswax ornaments to share with nearby friends and neighbors.

Next year when our little girl is a wee bit older, we're going to try to arrange for her and a few of her friends to bring Lucia buns and the joyful sound of little voices singing holiday songs to a local retirement home where I often volunteer.
