Is it always in the same breast? Same spot or different? How old is your baby? Any other issues (like over supply?)What have you tried so far?
Common causes of mastitis include bras that block a duct, carriers or hand bags that put pressure on the breast or underarm, sometimes even the way mama sleeps can cause it. And of course being overworked/tired doesn't help!
Some mamas find that taking lecithin daily can help to prevent mastitis. See http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html
and also for recurrent: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/recurrent-mastitis.html
Good luck - hope you feel better really soon!

I've had it twice due in part to massive oversupply. Last week I had blocked ducts twice but got that sorted before it developed further, and those were most likely caused by not drinking enough water during the day. Stupid, eh? I find I need 2 - 3 liters per day while BF to keep the body happy.

I had repeated plugged ducts with my second child that were finally resolved after I took her to see a cranial sacral therapist. Her latch looked fine to me, but it didn't feel fine. I went from getting plugged ducts several times a week to not at all after we went just a couple of times. I highly recommend a good CST for all sorts of reasons - this would be just one of them! :)
