im so sick of that paci!

Thread Starter

at first, we only used it for bedtime.

now that ds (19m) can ask for his paci, its getting out of control. he has it in his mouth almost all day, and throws a fit if i try to take it away.

i really have no problem giving it to him at night.

any BTDTs on how to eliminate daytime use of the paci?

We never used a paci but many of friends have. A few have had a in bed only rule & if the child asks for the paci at other times they can have it - but they need to be in their bed. Generally if the child reallllly wanted it then they would sit in bed & suck for a bit & then when they were done they'd come out.

We limited its use to the bed at about 18 months, well that and the car. If he wanted it he could get in bed. Most of the time though if it was out of sight it was out of mind.

I have just started enforcing a stringent bedtime/car ride only binky rule. Sometimes we get tantrums but for the most part it goes something like this: G "binky please?" Me: "Binkies are for night-night- are you ready for night-night?" G: "No night-night mama, binky?" Me: "Binkies are for night-night, you said no night night, lets go check out book, toy etc". If a tantrum ensues I just rinse and repeat conversation, usually ending up successfully. But like a pp said- it's an out of sight out of mind thing, if she sees it the whole cycle starts over. Also, my DH is not such an awesome helper on this one- he always argues with me that it shouldn't matter if she has her binky in the daytime and frequently gives in to her on it (less so now though that we have talked about it some).
