It makes me sad that there is even a question that 3 is too old for a baby doll.  My DD will be 8 in a few months and loves her dollies.  I think the media has so swayed our idea of childhood that we forget how long it really lasts.

 

ETA  My above statement was in no way directed at you OP.  I too find myself second guessing what is and isn't age appropriate.  The media forces kids to grow up much too quickly.  I just try to remember myself as a child.  And yes, I was playing with dolls even into middle school.

My daughter played with baby dolls until she was about eight or nine.  She did love her big girl dolls too, and that one you posted is adorable, but expensive.  I think they'd be very happy with the baby dolls.

3 is definitely not too young.  I know 8 yr old girls and boys who love baby dolls and kid dolls.

I interpreted the OP's post a little differently.  I thought she was questioning whether to get a doll  that looks like a baby versus one that looks like a girl.  DD will be four in February and wants a "big girl" doll.  Which, in her mind, means a doll with hair.  I bought her this Corolle one:

As my daughter grows up, she wants things that more accurately reflect who SHE is.  She might go back to her Calin and Tidoos but for now, she wants a doll she can style and is bigger.

I agree that it will depend on the child.

 

My two girl did not really like baby dolls, but preferred 'big girl' doll (toddler looking or 18"  older child looking dolls).

 

BUT I teach 3 yr old preschool and most of the girls LOVE the baby dolls and ignore the older looking dolls. I would ask the parents and see what the child prefers.

 

A child starts imaginary 'baby doll' play around age 2 or so (give or take) and it often continues to age 7-10 (depends on child).

 

I like the baby dolls, personally!
